How long did it take you to get your first client?

How long did you wait until you got your first hosting client from opening your business?
I think it took me a few days but i was offering free hosting so it was different than premium.

Did you advertise and did you think it paid off well to get your company known and attract visitors?

Actually, the way I did this was before I started my company, I went around and asked all my friends, and got them to ask their friends if they needed hosting, or would be needing it soon, so even before I started I had some clients already lined up :)

I had my first client before going out on my own. I was actually borrowing space from my then employer to host the site until my employer decided he wanted to charge me for the space. At that point I figured I could pay him for his box or get my own. And that is what I did.

we setup a couple servers and tested them out for about a month before going around to the local market and getting clients. We hosted locally for years and just the last years developed more of an online market...

I had a few clients lined up prior to offering my services on the internet. Most of them were just friends / family that wanted a small personal page. I also had a lot of friends that were finsihing up their last year at University and wanted web space to put up a portfolio they could use to supply potential employers.

I would say after about 1-2 weeks of being live on the net I had a few clients interested in our services and then a small percentage of them signed up.

Having some clients lined up is a great idea for starting off.
If you started off with a small reseller account having some people lined up could even pay off for your account and leave you with more free to sell to others.

I think that would be a good way to start off, as I said I started off doing free hosting only, didnt offer premium hosting.

We had 2 lined up before opening doors. Since then we have received about 10 customers in 2 months. Things are going very slowly for us but we are pressing on, always improving where we can and trying to offer our current customers good deals for referrals.

Regards.
