How do you ascertain whether a webhost is reputable?

Basically it's all there in the subject. I'm in Australia and the hosts I'm looking at are also based here.

Also, how would one determine the geographic location of a webhost's servers?

It's hard to determine the physical location of a server. Most hosts well boast about where there servers are located (That is if they are worth boasting about). You could also ask them directly.

I would ask these questions to determine if the host was reputable:
How long they have been in business?
How many employees do they have?
Where are their offices located?
Where are their servers located?
What kind of SLA do they offer?
How fast is their average support response time?

Now obviously they could easily lie but it's always worth the shot. Good luck.

Thanks!

Does anyone know of any resources on checking historical uptime figures?

And, does the location of the server usually make a big difference in transfer speeds; given your average website with say... 50-100k pages... with your typical server not running at overload or anything; I mean, visitors would not be able to tell the difference? Right? (Are there any other factors?)

Yes, but its mostly noticeable in the country range. ie servers on a decent network in the same country as you will perform quite similar.

Thanks! I have a feeling that I might go with a a larger established and reputable host; hopefully a local one - because the forex has been quite volatile lately!

You can generally find the broad geographical area by doing a traceroute. You could lookup the IP's on the ARIN's website for the last 3-4 hops...that gives you an idea and also do a Visual Traceroute. I forgot the website name... I think it was Visualroute.com
