Hosting Problems

I hope somebody can help me here coz I'm having a major headache trying to host my website. Admittedly, this is my first time with Windows Vista, but I have never experienced something as frustrating as this! With XP, hosting seemed a doddle.

I purchased web-hosting from 123 some weeks back, and they duly sent me the neccessary username & password for the FTP transfer (Firezilla.) This hasn't worked. The message keeps coming up 'Error 530'. It would appear that everything seems to be fine until I get to this stage.
As I wrote the site in Frontpage, I purchased Frontpage Server Extensions, in the hope that this may sort the problem out. However, this does'nt seem to work either. The message states as follows:
1)The web server may not have FSE
2)The web server may be temporarily out of service
3)The proxy server settings may be incorrect.
4)An error may have occurred in the web server

As I am using Vista and am assuming the settings are the same as XP, and I have also brought the firewall down.

Has anybody come across this, or can anybody offer some advice?

Much appreciated

This is an issue I have never faced personally. Have you tried uploading sites through an FTP client rather than Frontpage? What happens if you login to your account using an FTP client? Does it not work either?

Usually this is what you have to use to login:
ftp.yourdomainname.com
hosting account username
hosting account password

I also recommend using Smart FTP (http://www.smartftp.com/) as the client is more intuitive and more easy to use.

Many thanks for the tip. I have installed smartftp (much better than Firezilla)and it is coming up with the same message '530 error' It would appear that the hosting company have given me the wrong username / password, or they have major problems their end.

I'll get them to send me the correct one.

Thanks for the reply

Let us know whether the username and password is the problem. Hopefully there are people around the forum who have experienced this so that they can point you into the right direction.

Dear Silverman,

I think this is because FrontPage is no longer functional in many severs, coz MS has discontinued FrontPage, so its gone for good. There was a blog discussion abt this issue at

http://mylinuxwebhosting.com/2007/10/18/no-more-frontpage-extensions/

And also this is a common problem the entire Linux web hosting industry will be facing at the moment and not many people aware of this issue untill all of sudden FP ex stop working :smilie3:

This problem occurs when the home directory of the FTP site does not exist or the user does not have Read permissions to the home directory.

Have your hosting company do the following:
  1. Start the Internet Service Manager (ISM), which loads the Internet Information Server snap-in for the Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
  2. Right-click the default FTP site folder, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Home Directory tab, verify that the Local Path listed is valid, and that the Read check box is checked.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Using Windows Explorer, locate the folder listed in the Local Path setting you verified in Step 3. By default, the FTP home directory is C:\Inetpub\FTPRoot. .
  6. Right-click the folder, and then click the Security tab. Confirm that the required user has at least Read permissions on this folder.
