Hosting Directories

For those of you who do use these, which ones do you use, and why? Also, of the ones you use, which do you find are actually the most effective in delivering users to your site and helping you out a bit in the advertising area?

I am interested in submitting into a few directories I think, but I'd like to know more about them from people who actually use them so I can hear their experiences and such..

Also, those that do NOT use these, where do you submit your site, or advertise.. what do you do?

We submitted our site to every single free directory we could find. Believe me, this was ALOT of work. The traffic we received is minimal - a few hits every month from different directories - however - as far as PR goes and relative SE placement - its done pretty well..

Id recommend it, but be prepared for a large time commitment with a relatively low return on investment (especially initially)...
 
I submit my site and still do to free hosting directories. I don't brother getting paid listings and so far I only got one client from a directory.
 
Andrew, did having a good PR really make any difference at all to the number of people signed up with you?
I wouldn't think it would have any effect...

The search engine placement is something to consider though.
Did having the links make much difference to signups?
