I was scanning the headlines this morning and found an interesting article on HostGator's latest tool for their customers they call Speed Widget (although the application site has a different name on it, but that's another story...)
http://www.hostgator.com/webhostingspeed/
The tool is clearly a move into a social direction that has been known as web 2.0. The mash-up between Google Maps and speed-check application provides HostGator clients with a power tool that lets them check how fast their sites are loaded for their respective visitors, who can rank the connection speed. That world "map" is visual.
While I like the idea behind it, I was surprised with HostGator limiting the release to just their client-base. I understand the obvious reasons to bring the value into their marketing pitch, however, their social experiment isn't becoming very social.
Nevertheless, I am glad to see the industry moving toward more social web, and I am guessing we'll be seeing more companies coming up with cool 2.0 services as part of their value propositions to their clients.
