Host Gator. The Worst Host Ever!

I would like to take this opportunity to share my honest views on hostgator.

I joined them almost a year 1/2 ago looking for a cheap realiable host. All was fine, until my credit card expired. Then the problems really started when i had to contact support!

Despite updating my credit card details in their billing system (which is incidently has not been updated in over 9 years)

I found myself constantly being suspended for non payment. Now Im not sure about anyone else but isnt uptime the most important factor when considering joining a hosting company?

I spoke with their rude, unhelpful staff on many occassions. Most of the time the reply... Email support. Basically just a waste of time. When I did make payment to restore my account I told them everytime email me if any problems, make a note of these instructions in my account. Do not suspend my account without telling me.....

Yet again... Account suspended for non payment.....

After the 4th time of this and no reminder / warning emails Id had enough.

Despite arguing my rights with both support and the owner of the Company. Email: Brent@hostgator.com Whom didnt even have the politeness to reply!

I had to pay a full months hosting to create a backup of my files!!!!!! They would not give me my files back unless i paid 10$.

Then if that isnt enough. I couldnt backup all my files as the "baby" croc package would not allow me to do a full backup.

I was then asked to upgrade my account!! Remember. All i wanted to do is leave!!!!

Hostgator are unpolite, unprofessional and I would advise anyone looking for a hosting company to stay well clear of these cowboys.

All my sites are now with hostpapa.com . So far so good. Friendly support and even cheaper than hostgator!!!! Unlimited bandwidth and domains.

I am really sorry to hear about your experience with HostGator.com. I never had direct experience with the company myself, but I know its one of the largest, so they must have hundreds of thousands of clients to keep track and manage. I do, however, agree, if the problem was purely a billing issue, it is strange to hear they didn't know how to handle it properly.

As far as "leave a note" on my account, I think that most companies use similar software the doesn't allow to leave notes on user account. Most of the suspension type of activities are done automatically by software without human intervention.

I hope you know that unlimited bandwidth does not exist. :)

I am sorry for the trouble you had. Hostgator is known for having crappy service and even worse crappy support. It is best to move on with what information you did retrieve and fine a reputable host.

Actually, I heard different. I read a lot of (usually) positive comments about HostGator, that it is actually managed very well and most clients are happy with the company.

Alot of good reviews mainly come from their dedicated server area. When it comes to their shared hosting support is lacking and service is majority of the time is decent, but again falls too..more than it should.

Thanks for your replies guys.

Hostgator even gave me a call tonight, asking why I had left. By the time their support came off the phone from my explanation as to why I left I really do think she wished she hadnt bothered.

I felt much better afterwards though :)

I am happy you are feeling better. Remember, just becuase a host is not as big or well known as some of the top companies out there does not mean they can not provide you with excellent support. It is actually better to go with a small host as they will treat you as person instead of a number as some big hosts tend to do.

Sorry to see you had so many problems with them. I have seen mixed reviews about them. I wish you well with your new host, take greate care.

They are just huge and so no wonder they have as good as bad reviews about them

I am awar eof that, I wasmr epoint towards the issues he had with hostgator, and the reviews I have seen with the same problems for users and they have all still reflected different.

You are right. Having huge ammount of customers they seem not fall in love with each of them

I have seen more bad than good but that is from personal experience through a friend of mine that was always oddly on the server of HG's that went down.

Oddly though Brent is on a ton of web master forums so if he stumbles over here I am sure he would be more than willing to look up your info, however its right, most hosts use auto suspend rather than manual. Just a note on this as well, in client exec (billing) you can leave admin notes, so it can be done, 1/2 way at least, but you would have to have someone checking (manually) ever single client in CE too, so its only 1/2 possible IMHO.

Hi Tupo,

I've responded to you on webhostingtalk already regaurding the same post you made there, but just in case you didn't see it...

I'm very sorry for any billing issues you may have had with us. I assure you they're are three warning emails that go out before an account is suspended for non payment. Email however is one of the most reliable forms of communications now a days due to spam filters, and users not keeping their email up to date.

Could you let me know what your domain or ticket number is with us? I'd like to see exactly what happened.

Also you say you emailed me at brent@hostgator.com

I respond to every email no matter what so it sounds like something else is going on for you not to be receiving mail from us.

Hi Brent, nice of you to reach out for the user.
You also probably meant to say email to be one of the most unreliable forms of communications? :)

Although HostGator does have more than a few faults, believe me when I say that there are still far worse Webhosts out there, and one thing I can definitely say in Hostgator's defense is that they are well established. Not to mention, you are unlikely to find much better web hosts within the same price range. That said, most of my earlier criticisms still stand.

And there's the answer - price sells - if it's supportable. If you're a new provider with limited financial resources, it's hard to compete on price. The market share for quality based hosts lags behind market share for price based hosts. I do see that gap closing though, as prospects become more educated about their choices.
