Hi everyone, I am new to VPS and I need someone experienced to tell me how they work, etc. Also, I want to buy a VPS on this criteria:
The use will be for a Java server possibly using MySQL. So that means I need some sort of access to the VPS at any time. I want at the minimum 512MB RAM. About 300-500GB bandwith. I would like a 100Mbps connection also. I don't really know about anything else, so if someone would tell me what else I would need to include I would appreciate that a lot. If you could, can you guide me through how to use it? Like access the server before I buy? I do not want a contract.

Thank you in advanced,

Brandon

Hi Brandon,

Most VPS's are on a month to month basis. You can usually get lower rates if you comit for longer, but going Monthly shouldn't be an issue.

512MB minimum is OK for most applications, however Java likes to horde the memory, and combined with MySQL you could be asking for trouble. What kind of application are you running? How many concurrent visitors? What kind of load are you producing currently on your site?

300-500GB on bandwidth is fine too - may want to go LESS at first, then upgrade as needed.

Accessing the VPS will be done by SHELL for the most part in server configurations, but then once you're running, you'd use your control panel (whatever it happens to be) for maintaining your site. There is usually a POWER PANEL for the VPS also which allows you to perform backups, restores and power reboots.

You will still need shell access to perform general maintenance on the server including software upgrades, security patches etc. If you are not familir with Shell, see if you can host with a company that offers Managed VPS. If not, you can always pick up a management company to do the main things on your server for you.

Great advice Conor.
@Pandemic Scape - depending on your budget and projected traffic, I'd consider upping the memory.

Thank you for the information, I am not going to host a website. It's for the Java server. It's an emulator that other people who want to get on can going through the IP. And it may be anywhere from 30-50 people on at one time maximum.

Thanks,

Pandemic

That plan looks familiar to me.. :uhh: Oh, nevermind.
Month to month payments are common, but using the server before you buy isn't likely, though I understand why you'd like to get a better idea of what you're getting before you buy.

This mite help. If for example you were looking into a VPS managed by HyperVM you could always go to http://lxlabs.com/software/hypervm/demo/ and play around in there before deciding HyperVM fits your needs.

Do you want running tomcat or you have your own java application. I have used 512Mb vps xen base for one of my web base system running on tomcat with mysql. It run fine for 20~30 users. But for complex app, I suggest go to min 1Gb memory. For tomcat, it's also depend on your configurations.

512 is ok for Tomcat if the server has burst memory. Tomcat likes to grab more memory for short periods of time so burst is a very nice feature.
