Has any of your servers ever been hacked?
Or if your a reseller, have any servers your reseller account is on been hacked?

Did it cause much damage and did you lose anything?
What did you say to your customers?Did you have their data backed up and did it cause any problems if you didnt?

Did you end up losing money or sleep over it?

I have never had a server hacked (knock on wood) but I have had plenty of clients change their passwords to something dumb and their accounts have been hacked.

I was on TurnKeys server a few months back, and it got hacked probably twice and I lost everything, alot of clients, and they were not too pleased, nor was I, but I hold no hard feelings, could have happened to any one of us.

Yeah. Our servers have been hacked. Luckly we werent truly open for business yet and still pretty new to setting up security. However, with the hacking and such, it sure helps you out on improving your security for the company. I started out with mandrake, which I heared it has a couple of security problems. I suppose the people that hacked into our systems were some type of enemys of ours. I had to do a total format, and reinstall and setup everything. I got our systems back up now, and they are running pretty good & secure. Im setting up a system that will backup all files for each user, so I wont get b*tched at by all the users. Hopefully it will all work out pretty good. With all the hackings we have gone through, it couraged me to setting up a proxy that will deal with intruders. Ive been trying to figure out how to set it up, but yet no luck at doing so. I think im going to give winblowz a try at being a proxy since ive had years of knowledge with it.

Well I never have gotten hacked, but before I started selling web hosting I was having my site hosted on a diff. company. They got a DDOS attack and shut them down for 3 days, they had to put in a $4000 firewall in to stop it.

That has happened once to me, tell you they create better passwords now - lost all their hard work in a few minutes.

Touch wood so far, not been hacked (dont want to either lol)

I myself have never been hacked. Of course though I had a customer on a reseller account a couple weeks ago who had a very simple password and he got hacked and his customers db was all lost. Luckily my admin had done a backup of that server that night and everything was restored with a new password of course :D

Never been hacked, i think I just got out of my old host just in time because his box just got hacked, now I really have to get that security stuff done :)

Pass the piece of wood Mark - not here, just one client who was silly and gave his details to 'a mate' to do some work for him and wrecked his whole site

A mate

That's rich!

I just got my server secured yesterday, tmp secured, a light firewall installed kernel upgrade, I had a 2 year old kernel running on a brand spanking new box! If your looking for security go to www.rack911.com, Steve is great, and knows his stuff! I got all my security stuff done for $20! I was very impressed with how professinal he was also.

I've been hacked about 2 or 3 times, mail bombed, DDosEd and who knows what not. It is not very fun and has been going on from Apr to Dec last year. In Dec I moved to a more secure operating system and a new datacenter. Keeping my fingers crossed that it has stopped.

Do you think hackers are getting into more boxes now or do you just think more people are trying to do it?

i think its both, more exploits come out people dont update. This leaves more and more boxes open. Then people see the exploit and try to use it causing problems.

I agree. This is the number one cause, admins not patching. Sadly, it has happened to me once before which was not fun at all. Although I do now appreciate the lessens that it taught and I am a better admin for it, I think. Experience is knowledge!

Sorry to dig up an old thread. Was an interesting topic.

I once had it happen when getting a new box from a provider. They put it online, emailed me, they set it up wrong, so I emailed them back and asked for a new IP assignment, this worked, I got notification and between me getting the notification and logging on the box was hacked, compromised and launched an attack on my provider. :-s I didnt even have chance to log in my self. OS was re installed :) and no damage done because the box was brand new.

Other times hacks have happened was sites using unsecure code and their own site got hacked because of a bad script. Never had a server in production hacked though and no other sites vulnerable scripts have caused problems to the server or others sites on a server.
