My dedicated server is set up.
I am totally lost.
I have a domain registared with godaddy.
how do I transfer that domain to my current dedicated server so I can host it
on my dedicated server?

Hi, welcome to the forum. First of all, make sure you actually need the whole dedicated server for yourself (if your site is heavy and requires dedicated resources). Dedicated servers are more expensive to maintain, even then Virtual Private Servers. May I ask why you went for a dedicated server, because you do not sound like you actually know what to do with it. Sorry if I sound out of line... Not meant that way. :)

To transfer your domain:

1. Find out what the nameservers of your domain should be from your hosting provider. Usually they have this look:

NS1.DOMAIN.COM
NS2.DOMAIN.COM

2. Log in to your GoDaddy.com account

3. Select the domain to be transfered (make sure it is not locked)

4. Click on "Set Name Servers"

5. Proceed to changing them to the required names.

6. It takes up to 72 hours sometimes for the domain to propagate.

Best,

thanks for the info.
the website I am creating is going to have a lot of bandwith usage.
at least 2500 GB a month.
you can only get that with a dedicated server.

Gotcha. 2500GB indeed requires its own box.
Your hosting company must have provided you with Web Host Manager panel where you will be in control for creating as many accounts (domains/sites) as you wish.
Upon logging in that manager (in most cases it is user-friendly), you just create an account, choose username and password for the FTP, make sure your domain is pointed to correct nameservers and viola... Just upload the content to the sites.

If I am missing something, I hope the crowd here will correct/add something.

Best,

WHM Cpanel is awesome.

Take your time, don't rush. You wouldn't want to correct mistakes when it is late.

Best,

Hello jalistthehitter,

Here is a quick guide for a setting up nameservers and your website:

1. Make Sure you have added 2 IP's or more in your ifconfig or ("Add / Remove IP Addresses") in Web Host Manager

2. Click on Basic cPanel/WHM Setup and add 2 nameservers (most likely this domain name which you are using)

3. Create an account in Web Host Manager

4. Register the Nameservers in Godaddy the IP address and the nameserver i.e ns1.yourdomain.com -- 123.456.789.100
ns2.yourdomain.com -- 123.456.789.101

It may take 24 hours for your domain to propergate with Godaddy.
And now you are all set :)

jalistthehitter,

Just a suggestion but you may want to look into hiring someone to manage the server for you as well just to keep up on security of the server so you don't run into issues in the future with outdated software, OS, or the like.

I would recommned a company such as http://www.ezsm.net/ to assist in the overall management of your server.
