I have a friend looking for free hosting and I had the best experience with Google as far as ease of use and uptime. I don't know if they still offer it or if it's still any good. If not, what free host would you recommend to a beginner? It would need to have some sort of site builder as he doesn't have a clue.

I doubt that you will get any sitebuilder if you go for a free host. But give it a search.
By the way, you will get site builder with almost all paid hosts.

You mean the old Geocities accounts through Google? I think that they still have them and that they still have their site builder too but I haven't used it in the best part of eight years I would guess! Bit of a blast from the past there, it's how I started out. Geocities and Bravenet.

Freewebs.com has a website template thing. Its not as simple as the Geocities I remember from back in the day but its has a nice mix of templates if they can do the rest of the HTML.

Terapad.com also has templates with different site type options. You can add a blog, gallery, e-commerce, etc. Not as many templates but quite a bit of out of the box functionality.

No, not geocities

I believe it was called googlepages but perhaps it wasn't extensively used as no one here seems to know it. My friend needs WYSIWYG as he really doesn't have a clue. Since it's just for a personal/family site, he doesn't want to spend money. His family is planning a huge family reunion and he just needs to have a way to keep everyone updated and connected on what's going on.

I think that for the family wev site any free web hosting provider might be good or evan static paid web host with guarantees. I think that for $10 for year that would be more then better to have the paid. I think that $10 per year will not cut your budget.
