google selling domains/hosting

Looks like google is in the market now.. I just heard about it recently through a friend. So today I found an articale on it :mic:

What do you guys think? Seems like google is trying to get into ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. They get into emailing, hosting, become a domain registrar, adsense etc...

Makes me wonder if they will ever take major control of the WWW someday! :smash:

If you read the article, Google doesn't have any current plans to sell domain names but to get a better understanding of the domain name system.

And then of course, there is the ongoing rumour that Google may be developing its own web browser (it owns www.gbrowser.com). And then the pie-in-the-sky idea that it may release its own operating system.

No Suprise there, I'm not suprise .google extension is on there too.
 
Seems they wanna rule the market. What started as a simple search engine is now spreading out. Good till it doesn't turn out into another Microsoft :(
 
I can't blame them though! I mean, if I was in their spot I'd want to expand too. I just hope they don't "over" do it. Also hopefully, this doesn't mean google will equal "worse quality." I've noticed when companies are smaller and specialize in a particular assignment, they do A LOT better. Let's hope google's service doesn't take a hit from expanding.
 
That article is over two years old, and still no domain registrar services from Google. I think that, just like Amazon before them, it's part of some back-end or alternately-branded operation.
 
I don't get HOW or WHY it would be hard for them to become a domain registar? All they need to do is pickup a $6.25 reseller account and they are off selling. I'm sure google could even partner up with Enom or ICANN.
 
AFAIK they are a registrar, but for one reason or another they prefer not to engage in actually developing that business. There's probably too little in it for them. They've even partnered with Enom and Godaddy for selling domain names in connection with Google Apps service.

Ha... didn't know that!

I wonder how many people would actually BUY domains, if google was selling them openly to the public. I wouldn't just because I don't trust google at all!
 
Google actually sells domains thru TuCows, if i not wrong. I guess saw it in their GoogleApps application, if you didn't have a domain otherwise, so you could get one thru them.
 
I thought yahoo was TuCows? I doubt google and yahoo work togethor :p Even if google sold domains, I bet they wouldn't be able to compete with the competition.
 
I guess Tucows is a registrar and both Yahoo and Google sell domains thru them. Again, i am not sure, may be someone who got domains for googleapps thru google can throw more light on this.

It’s not a great thing that Google is capitalizing on anything which it thinks of and people supporting it for that. We don’t want a monopolistic market on the internet which would definitely have negative effects for the users and customers.
Google is like a giant now who’s eating everything that’s coming in its way.
 
It is more of a situation where you appreciate someone who ruins M$'s monopoly (MSN search and all) and now the same character of acknowledgement is turning out into a monopoly and giant in the market.

Is history going to repeat itself?
 
I think that google won't be good competitor in webhosting sphere. And other point of view: I think if they appear they'll stimulate other companies provide better services.

If you were Eric Schmidt, and your company was making $10 billion revenue per year, why would you want to be a "reseller" of one of the best domain registrars to date. You wouldn't you would want to compete with them not boost their profits.

Besides if they sold their own domains they would make more profit than being a reseller. They have obvious reasons not to sell domains even 2 years on and they are not ready to rule that specific industry yet.
 
Google watching is a favourite pass time for many. Sometimes it goes to a ridiculous extend. I would be interested if google were to come up with any innovation, not just another paypal clone, godaddy clone etc.
