GatorGigabyte - same as hostgator?

I saw a posting here on the forums regarding GatorGigabyte which I'd never heard of before;

http://www.hostingdiscussion.com/ne...ches-gigabit-hosting-packages-10x-speeds.html

On their site they claim to be the #1 Rated Hosting Provider. I've never heard of them before, have you?

Are they Hostgator with just a different skin? The gator graphic is VERY similar but different just enough to not be a copyright issue (i think).

Anyone have any information on these guys? Are they a branch of HostGator? I didn't see any mention of them either on the hostgator site, and didn't see anything on gatorgigabyte to say they were a sister company etc.

If they are separate companies, it would seem that the gigabyte place is trying to piggyback on the name of Gator.

Whois says their domain name was first registered in June 2010. Amazing that they've reached the #1 Rated Hosting Provider status in just 8 short months.

Any thoughts or information?

Looking at the whois and also tracert on the IP's I would tend to agree that they are just a piggybacker and have no affiliation to hostgator

Hostgator is in Texas and GatorGigabyte is in California. Also hostgator is the registrar for their domain and has a public whois where as GatorGigabyte is reged at namecheap and has a private registration.

Actually after more looking it might be linked to vpslatch.com..

GatorGigaByte.com -> 67.220.80.149
VPSLatch.net -> 67.220.80.148

also the poster is VL-Adam

"VL-Adam" need to reply this thread. As right now he is representing Gator Gigabyte. I hope he should be able to answer all these questions. :)

I'd just never seen the site before until I saw that press release and it struck me as odd. Figured I'd check in with others here on it. While the graphic for cartoon gator is definitely different, it's close enough to be a potential issue. I sure wouldn't authorize that graphic for my own site, it's a potential lawsuit that I wouldn't want to have the time to defend.

From Robtex:

Gatorgigabyte.com is a domain controlled by two name servers at gatorgigabyte.com themselves. The name server ns1.vpslatch.net stated in SOA record is not in the list of name servers. We are missing the IP:s of two servers: ns4.gatorgigabyte.com and ns3.gatorgigabyte.com. Incoming mail for gatorgigabyte.com is handled by one mail server at gatorgigabyte.com. gatorgigabyte.com has one IP number (67.220.80.149).

Www.gatorgigabyte.com cnames to this hostname. Gatorgigabyte.com use this as a mail server. More information
gatorgigabyte.com is ranked #1279558 world wide and is hosted on a server in United States. It has six inlinks.

Reputation is not yet known.It is not listed in any blacklists.

As soon as I saw the Gator on their site, I thought to myself, (self) Wow, that's just too similar to Hostgator - might cause problems down the line! Yipes.

I like the design, don't get me wrong, but it just looked very similar and was confused if hostgator was branching into something new which I hadn't heard about. Found some threads at WHT discussing the same thing and some other sites like hawk host and frog host too which are the same style character type sites. Seems to be a little bit of a ruckus over there too regarding legality, site rips, inspiration etc etc.

In this business, knowing and understanding your competition is essential. :thumbup:

Hello,

My name is Adam Jack, owner of both VPSLatch.net and GatorGigabyte.com. I recently acquired GatorGigabyte in a sale from an acquaintance of mine in the hosting industry. I can assure all of you that GatorGigabyte is is no way, shape, or form, related to HostGator.com, nor are we attempting to "piggy-back" off their company. The gator simply symbolizes the state where the previous owner went to for college (University of Florida), Florida is known as "Gator Country" (mostly because of the swamps and country areas, also for the University of Florida mascot).

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to PM me, or shoot me an e-mail at adam.j@gatorgigabyte.com.

Have a great day!

Thanks for the update - clears up any confusion about the site. :D

Thanks for jumping in on this Adam. you can see how I may have been confused as to what was going on due to the similarities of the sites and mascots etc. I spent some time in Gainsville Florida and when you walk down the street every second sign has an alligator on it, each of them however are different.

Good luck on the new acquisition.

Hey Conor,

In regards to GatorGigabyte, I noticed their site as well about 1-2 weeks ago. However, it looks like you were the only one willing to speak out :). I certainly see the resemblance and it's great that Adam was able to confirm everything for us. All I can say is run with it and I think you will do very well with this new brand.

In regards to hawk host and frog host they are the same company but two different brands. One (hawk host) is for their non-overselling audience and (frog host) is where they offer their unlimited packages.

There are a few other sites that have the same mascot creation such as speedy sparrow and host cheetah. Look them up and you will see what I mean. They must be using the same designer for their mascot development.

Best Regards,
