Free Templates or Make Your Own

There are many templates out there for making a website. Do you use them or do you make your own?

Getting templates is easier in creating a website but sometimes they don't match up with each other. You will still end up tweaking the templates' code for a better look of the website.

I look at templates all the time, and use some from time to time if they fit. Personally, I'd rather have a unique site, but some clients just don't care - they simply want a presence, down, dirty and cheap.

Templates are great for inspiration and learning, but I am with Steve, I like unique designs.

You could always buy a template and tweak it a bit to give it an unique edge.

Templates are an easy way to get a website done quickly. Obviously a custom desing will let you stand out but the cost may be prohibitive.

I agree with Exciter. You can make a template unique by tweaking it a bit. I have a Joomla website using (even) a default template provided by Joomla. I modified it a bit by changing the position of the user1, user2 and left-bar, and I think it looks unique. :)

Thanks for the recommendations. I would try to use templates to get some ideas for my next project.

I would like to ask another question based on the replies from this topic. What is the difference with having free templates from the paid ones?

hey i no this is pretty useless at the min but in a couple of weeks we are adding a templates section to our hosting site and then a dedicated templates site to. cheap as chips wordpress and site templates. they just make it easier for people who arent into much web design, its good for people who want a site and beable to buy cheap domains and hosting all at once..:shh:

Templates are great newbies

Agreed, templates are great for people just starting out or for anyone that wants to throw a quick site together. When you spend a lot of time and passion on one of your projects you certainly would want a custom template to show your websites uniqueness and individualism to separate you from the other websites in your industry.

I would love to make my own design but my patience is lacking. I have searched and saved many templates that I tweak to make them somewhat different. The site I have now is from a free template and I'm happy with it but in the future I would like to customize my own site.

A unique design is always best. It gives you your own identity. A template is good in a pinch, but you don't really want people seeing your site and saying "Didn't I just see a site that looked just like that?"

You can't go wrong with templates. I personally think that a webhosting site is VERY effective with simply WHMCS in the root of the site and a company blog just to keep the clients up to date.

However, it makes your site a lot more credible when you have a nice main site.

You could start with a template and edit to suit, this is what exactly we have done, However we are having a unique design done soon.

Check out template monster, they have some good designs for $50 or so.
