Free control panels? webmin/usermin

What do you think of free control panels for lower end servers? webmin/usermin Have you used any of them at all? Tell us about your experiences. Thanks!
 
I didnt use them, but i check webmin before, its better than not having a control panel, especially if your acustomed to the command line, but it wouldnt be good choice to use it for clients.
 
I've looked at Webmin before. It's actually pretty good for a free control panel. It does almost everything you'd need it to basically do for running a basic website - it just doesn't have the extra features that paid control panels would throw in.

And I've seen some skinning services that make Webmin look real nice too, so if you're thinking that Webmin looks a bit "out" you could just consider purchasing a skin!

The hard part is trying to make users try other control panels - as cPanel is well known by many customers, and some that aren't willing to switch to another control panel easily! =)

Webmin is definitely nice for remote management. However, on a production server, I chose to stick to WHM / cli just because I like to keep our processes consistent. I do use webmin on our backup servers, and internal company servers. I haven't used vhcs but I will check it out. Thanks for the link u2mike!

Webmin with Usermin and now Virtualmin you can do allot. You may also want to look into CP+ but is is not free but almost free. CP+ is by psoft.net
 
VHCS looks very nice. I hope they can develope it further. Looks like its missing a few key features such as frontpage extension support, and more advanced statistics such as Awstats
 
webmin is great for hosting basic sites, but put on a comparison table with a host providing cpanel and plesk, it wouldn't even compare.
 
Same here i love Cpanel alot .... i also quite like matrixstats from fasthost it's easy simple but has all the details inside out i like that better but fasthost are real shithost they have loads off downtime!!
 
I find Webmin a must when you are administering your own server/sites yourself. I haven?t used usermin yet.
 
Webmin is decent but I had some issues setting it up. Apparently there are a number of modules that need to be configured. But it is definitely a good free control panel.
 
Webmin is more to control the server. I would not recommend providing it to clients though. I would not recommend actually offering hosting without a good control panel unless you really know what you're doing. As it can be pretty hard to work out things with webmin. With all that said, webmin is still a good server control panel.
 
I agree, i know many people that used to host at fasthosts and complain about huge downtimes and incredibly slow servers. When you do a few whois checks from whois.sc , you can see that fasthosts averagely hosts about 1500 web sites per server.
 
Webmin is a web-based interface for system administration for Unix. Using any browser that supports tables and forms, you can setup user accounts, Apache, DNS, file sharing and so on.
 
I think on a test / non production server they will do the job well but i wouldn't consider offering it to a paid-client.
