Forum Software?

I've been considering adding forum to a few of my sites but I never did that before. Can you recommend me some software platform: BBcode, SMF, vBulletin...

Thanks.

I've always used PHPBB for my forums, it's always been good and there are no featured that I can think of that are missing from the latest version - and if there is anything that could be improved then there's most likely a mod to do it :D

All three are good. I like phpBB myself as it's free and easy to use. vBulletin has a charge and a yearly charge for maintenance. Both are good in their own right.

What's nice is that there are so many conversion scripts on the web that if you decide to change from one software to another, you can easily pick up a free conversion script and get it done within 30 minutes.

I've used phpBB in the past as well as IPB, subsiquently they are all good in their own rights as handson has said... many opt for VBulitin for larger forum sites such as HD or WHT though for most sites phpBB seems a good alternative though I still dislike the new admin panel personally. and IPB tends to be the better for certain customisations

I have never run a forum yet but I often participate on forums using different platforms. I think the three platforms you mentioned are great and user friendly, and my favorite is SMF.

I would go for SMF platform. It is very simple to use. The other forum platforms are good in their own rights. The choice depends on who is using and managing the forum.

Thanks for the advices. I didn't know about the conversion scripts though, that is a nice option, in case you want to migrate to some other platform.

I didn't know about the conversion ones either. I've been playing with SMF again yet I still don't fully get some of the add-on options that you are able to install.

If you have budget for your forum then I would choose vBulletin4 because I think it's a #1 forum software but if you don't have it then I would install phpBB or SMF.

I've used phpBB and vBulletin and, as has been said, both have their benefits and drawbacks. I had a lot of trouble with phpBB at the beginning, though later versions seem to be much less buggy.

Vbulletine it's it.

SMF - Best Free
vBulletin - Best Paid

IMO, you should start with SMF and move to vBulletin later on. There are migration tools that you can do that "easily".

PHPBB's new version really confuses novice people. SMF structure is still clean and very much user friendly.

You can start with SMF and while you grow there are many tools available to migrate to VB.

We never got into SMF but it seems to be quite popular.

We use to use phpBB a lot but we've fallen in love with vBulletin completely. The latest release is phenomenal.
