Ev1 buys license from SCO

Robert Marsh has bought a license from SCO (reported to be worth over $1,000,000) to prevent any legal action being taken by SCO.

There are a few things I have to say about this:

1. I honestly think this was a very bad move by EV1/Robert supporting SCO and giving them such funding for legal lawsuits to take on other companies.
2. In a sticky thread Robert posted about the new DC and servers being available when this thread was A REPLY TO THE SCO ISSUE, I think he is trying to take advantage of the fact a lot of sites will be linking to this post and his first post contains info for the new DC.
I think this is a very bad publicity stunt, what else could posting about the new DC in that thread be for?
3. This is a total waste of money if SCO loses their lawsuit, the money for this license can not be refunded if they do lose...money down the drain.
4. I think EV1 will lose clients without a doubt because the clients are now indirectly supporting the campaign by SCO.
I know there are open source/GPL sites on the EV1 network, do you think they will stay?
What about people that are totally against SCO?
5. I do think that MAYBE Robert was just trying to protect clients at the EV1 datacentres from legal action, but I still dont think he should have given so much money to SCO when they are still in the middle of legal action (I personally dont think they will win the suit)
6. Pleaseeeeee tell me this wasnt the big announcement from EV1!!
What a disappointment if it is....

Come on people, give your comments on this

Bad deal, horrible business practice right there.

1) I believe Robert is in on this one, he has some money in there somewhere besides the 1mil in the license.
2)Maybe he was trying to protect customers, but maybe wait until the won the suit.
3)IT WAS A HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT! This I would believe would piss the hell out of the coders of unix with all the boxes he hosts. Bad times there, lets see what is in the future of Ev1...

What do you mean by number 1?
He is the one spending the 1 million so why would there be more money in there somewhere, ie. him spending more?

I totally agree with number 2 and 3.
I think this has brought a lot of bad publicity to EV1 and it was a bad move..

Basically for anyone 'in the know' about what's going on is going to hang their head - give SCO nothing, they got a low bank balance and then decided that the only way back was to get 'license' fees - but for what?? If the case is not proven then I hope they will be sued by everyone who has contributed to the open source / GPL OS's that are available and SCO will make their source available for all to see - just in case they've 'nicked' something from others.

The EV1 move was one that really disturbed me as it's paying someone on a threat not a promise, SCO may loose everything and go out of business leaving all those out of pocket having to recharge their clients for their mistake.

Soap box now put away :D

:D - imagine that amount being ploughed into one of the 'remaining' ones geez think how much that could have improved it with some funding available to the main developers.

It was a very muddled thread. Robert keept pushing the new DC and the new offers. Hard to skate around the SCO issue. That being said Robert & EV1 and fairly smart business people. Remeber when they started $99 servers? Everyone thought they wouldn't last or it would lead to the downfall of hosting. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

Thats a very good point, it could have really helped what was already available now to improve it, but of course I doubt Robert would give that kind of money to people doing it for free ;)

Do you think it was wrong to keep promoting the new DC and offers in the threads about the SCO issue?

SCO is so full of ****. They never owned the rights for Linux. Even if they did they lost them all when it went to IBM. I think it is funny that is has been almost 22 years that they have waited to even bring this information to the public. It sounds like an old business man coming to the end of his time... just trying to make some quick cash for his business SCO.

As to Robert sending out $1,000,000 to SCO to stay out of legal trouble I think that was a huge mistake. If they were to stay in battle with SCO they would of gotten a ton of publicity on the internet/radio/news. In return everyone that was against the SCO campaign would join EV1 and support them by purchasing servers.

Instead of making millions... he just tossed a few million down the drain to avoid future drama. I think Robert just didn't want to deal with it.

I didnt even think about that, thats a great point, it would have been great publicity.

What would they have had to give to SCO if they had of lost?It couldnt have been that much could it?Since SCO were still in court about if what they are saying is even valid anyway so EV1 didnt NEED to give them anything at that stage
