Who would have though: France, England, Spain, Italy, Spain are out.

With semi-finals matches remaining, what's your take on Euro 2004?

Portugal - Netherlands

Greece - Denmark/Czech Rep.

I see Czech in the final, but Netherlands - Portugal - I honestly can't predict. I would say Portugal, since they are the hosts... you know what I mean? :D

I think it will be a Netherlands/Czech final with the Netherlands winning on a golden goal.

Blue, you gave so much detail! :)

I too believe in a Netherlands/Czech final, but I can't vouch for that golden goal thing. In fact I can't even say who would be the winner of those two. I just hope the final will be a nice game. (Will the final be played using golden goal rule, not the silver goal?)

I know what you mean Artashes. I hope you're not right, though. I hated how France won that title a few years back.

How wrong were we? Huh? Greece?

It makes perfect sense for Portugal to beat Greece so we won't even be able to say that the final was "fixed". I really don't like the pattern that emerges: the host gets the laurels.

But hey, maybe Greece will beat Portugal too. :)

With Porto winning the Champion's League this year, I doubt Greece has any chances at all. Although I thought the same when they played France and Czechs...

If Greece wins, which would mean they are the best team in Europe, I will probably hang myself. :D

So far they are second best. It's a proof that the system is flawed and reason enough to hang yourself. I see no reason for you to wait and see if Greece also wins the final. :D

IMO Greece deserve to win - I want to see Portugal lose on their home turf. I don't know - I'm a little sour still about the England vs Portugal match :(

That is why we needed Portugal to win. At least on some level it is a better excuse.

Well, people, its over. Greece is... umm... the best team in Europe.

Technically that's not true - it depends who is drawn against who to start with. If Greece had to play every single team in the Euro 2004 line-up they would most likely not have made it very far :)

Don't diminish their win. They had to beat some very good teams and they did what no one thought they could do.
Congratulations to Greece.

I will side with Artashes on this one, although I didn't like Portugal's game either.

IMO the winner should be among the best teams on the field. Greece wasn't and is not one of them. They played a steady unspectacular game (in all the matches) and they scored the absolute minimum to succeed.

The whole championship was sub-standard (IMHO), with most of the big teams playing poorly. The result: a substandard winner. A system's flaw.

Can we call that match a final? It was a poor excuse for a football game (soccer for the north americans).

I disagree Dan.
This is not an event that just happened over a day or two.
Greece beat very good teams again and again. Just because it's not pretty to watch doesn't make the accomplishment any less significant.

There are times when a team just makes other teams look bad. At the end of the day, winning is the goal of all of them and Greece won more games than every one else.

I agree that Greece played smart and won. Are they the best though? I don't think so.

Personally I couldn't care less who wins. What I ultimately care about is the spectacle. I want so see a good game (with lots of good passes, dribbles, shots) preferably with many goals. I don't like the distructive game played by some country representatives and I qualify Greece as one of these.

It's easy to destroy a game, what is hard is to build a nice game. I value perseverance and hard work (what Greece showed), but what I really admire are great talents and the sparks of genius which make for really great games.

If all teams would play like Greece, football (soccer) would be savorless.

Michael, certainly a credit is well deserved by Greece, but do they have my confidence in their game? No. See, they play defensively, they adapt other team's way of playing and using it against them. Much like just returning every singly shot back in the court in tennis without taking risk, without hitting winners, etc. - boring and quite annoying. This makes Greece game boring as well, in my opinion. Good football is when you see two completely different strategies at work, when teams take risk.

Nothing can be said now - they are the champions, most teams that lost to them really undervalued them competitively. But will we see the same performance in the World Cup? I'm not sure. Either way I will be the first in line to watch them in action.

Best,

I remember what was football in 80 years . Then football-players played
for the sake of game and for the sake of public. Now they are playing
tactical football for the sake of pure financial benefit. Simply the football
has turned to business and the rules are same like in the business. :)
