why go to the expense of getting a domain and setting up a website and then use a free email address rather than 1 linked to the domain.

Yes, web host also provides many email features. Like, email forwarding, email auto responders. These are useful features, so it is always better to use email services provided by web host.
 
I use my work email and import it into Gmail as I do with all my other accounts, simply saves having to login multiple email accounts - With Gmail it is also quite nicely organized with labels / folders & having emails automatically routed to.
