What do you think about elcohost.com? The offer seems very interesting. Did anyone have an experience with this hosting provider?

Several things set me off from them.

  1. Unprofessional looking website
  2. Claim that they host over 915,000 domains - yeah right.
  3. Unlimited Storage/Bandwidth - Doesn't Exist, so You'll Have to Read the Fine Print

Stay away. :shaky:

475 mentions of them in google and they have 915,000 domains? Really?

"url:www.elcohost.com" in google lists 5 links, each of them being advertisements.

WHOIS states that elcohost.com was registered in May 2009. That's some amazing marketing if they have almost a million domains.

"We also do provide Support Via Direct Telephone. Though, our Phone operators are not online 24 hours for scarcity of Phone operating stuffs, but we do try to provide faster response on immediate assistance. "

I"m sorry, what is the "scarcity of Phone operating stuffs"?

I decided to open a live chat with an operator "Andrew" who claimed that they own their own data center and servers, yet after a 4 minute wait from asking the question "where is your data center located" - I received "they are located all over the world".

So I asked if they were ISO 9000 and SAS 70 compliant - and it took 4 minutes to receive "I've consulted with my colleagues and yes, we are ISO and SAS sertificates" - no I did not make a spelling error ;)

"There is a data center in Rome, Paris, London, India, NY, Budapest"

So I asked the final question:

"why is it that Elcohost.com - the site I went to, says the domain was registered in May 2009, the live help links through a site called "hostmarkets.info" and both have the same information? Are you working for Elcohost, Hostmarkets or somewhere else?"

The answer I received (after a 6 minutes wait):
"The both sites are in the same company - but for different data centar"

So I asked:
"ok- which one woudl I use if I want to register in the US data center?"

The answer:
"both you can use"

So, the review is pretty shady operation! They're a reseller for a reseller which means YOU get limited control over things. The servers, are going to be crammed with anything and everything (I would assume), and since they're a large reseller, it'll be a 50/50 crap shoot as to who it is that you really talk to!

Personal recommendation is what I have for all these bulk reseller hosting type companies - stay away, stay FAR away!

Resellers on a whole are generally ok, but when it comes to organizations that cater specifically to resellers who cater to resellers - there's a long line of people over head that you'd have to communicate should your site get suspended for abuse etc.

Hi George12 and welcome to Hosting Discussion. :)
Didn't have to go any research on this one .... looks like the overwhelming concensus is to stay off away from this provider.

Conor, thank you, that was VERY entertaining indeed. The answers given to your questions in the live chat were so ridiculous I actually felt embarrassed for the company and the claims its making on their website.

CLEARLY, with the first visit to the site I get about 10 red flags raised, and CLEARLY this particular thread was an attempt to spam the company name out there. And CLEARLY, I will be living it live so that people who search for this name come across this thread and read all the information necessary about this shady operator that hopes to sign up a few people using scam tactics.

Good stuff on their web site like:

Proffesional Web Hosting !!

And gotta luv those awards from 2004 and 2006.

Yeah, I was torn from just marking the thread for your review as a spam thread - but then I figured, what the heck, I'll do some due diligence work none the less!

It's the claims and wording and shady tactics of web hosts such as this that give the rest of the hosting community a bad name.

At the same time, if it wasn't for the hosts like this that are notorious for providing bad support, I'm not saying these guys DO, but it's guys like this that allow other hosts who are REALLY in business for themselves show true customer support and gain a customer for life!

I like these threads. We should leave threads like these "do you know ____?" up and simply investigate the providers that are spammed to us. It's like To Catch a Predator meets HostingDiscussion.

I was just thinking the same for our weekly/bi-weekly column on our blog. :)

"Conversations with the ... " haven't decided what yet.
