Egypt Without Internet..

With all the recent anti-goverment riots taking place in Egypt right now, it seems internet access to and from Egypt has been shut down.

I wonder how bad this is affecting all of the hosts and datacenters in Egypt, and everyone else for that matter. It's a bit ironic that we were discussing about what we would do without internet just the other day, here in HD.

Yes, we all need to take a minute and reflect how lucky we all have it, and sometimes how we take it for granted.

And if you know anyone over there let us hope they get out safely without getting involved in their revolution. Lets hope the people get what they deserve...

Oh, you're so funny. Actually, on last count, I'm on 59 different forums. I do spend the majority of time on WHT, HD and TalkFreelance though.

I always imagined there would be more peace in the world now that we're into the year 2011.

Might make people think twice about supporting the bill being pushed in our government for the president to have a "internet kill switch".. If America was to revolt against our government you can bet they would most likely do the same as Egypt.

Odd question: should ISP and hosts refund their customers for the days when they didn't receive service, or does the situation qualify for "act of God"?

(I don't mean to imply that Mubarak is some sort of deity. )

It'll be interesting to see how refunds/credits are handled in this situation. I wouldn't know what provision of a contract something like this would fall under other than possibly something along the line of "beyond their control" type blankets.

Here's an interesting excerpt form the Blizard/Word of Warcraft terms of service. I'm sure we'll see these added to other terms of service agreements (I know it's being added to ours)

Force Majeure.

Others have pasted things such as;

I'm sure the ISPs have this little loophole covered but I know we (hands-on) did not have such a clause, but it's being sent to a lawyer tomorrow for review and insert.

It is very messy in Egypt right now and there is a lot of uncertainty. You know that foreign citizens are getting out of the country and despite that army and police said no force would be used against those participating to demonstrations, there it is possible clashes to turn to mini civil war, if Mubarak refuse to step down informally or formally...

Trust me the last thing to care about in such a situation is Internet access. Internet access is a privilege of the economies which function normally.

PS: Internet access has actually been restored in some sites.

You know, Egypt even doesn't seem to be the last country to revolute... Europe is also trembling.

The governments try to hide problems from people's eyes, making the fixing of them more complicated. Some day it will put our world down.

Internet is the way of communication. Since no communication - no information - no problem. But the problem is still there becoming more severe day to day.
