Domain names

How many hosts here sell domain names as well as hosting?

What if a customer cancels their account and requests a refund? I believe with most domain name reseller accounts you cannot request a refund.

So do you eat the cost of the domain name purchase if a customer decides to cancel? If that is the case, is it really worth it?

If you offered the domain name for free, of course you'd be taking a loss. In that scenario, would it be worth it? Depends on how successful your promotion is overall. If your churn is abnormally high, I suspect you have other issues more important than domain name considerations. If you're not offering domain names for free, what's the loss? :)

What I mean is do you tell the customer domain name registration is non-refundable? Or do you just eat the cost if a customer cancels?

If the answer is the latter, I think a lot of people would take advantage of it and use your services just to get a free domain name.

Yes, domain names shouldn't be refundable and I would try to recover the cost of the domain name in your pricing structure.

I offer domains and as the others said, they are never refundable.

I'm thinking of doing a promo next month as free domain with every account. If I do that, the term would be, if you cancel you have to pay the transfer fee before the domain is released.

Either way, the host doesn't eat a loss.

Well, I think the whole concept of offering domains for free is a bad idea. We're in business to make money. Offering premiums for services is one thing, but offering free product that you have to purchase at wholesale price at best is financially naive.

Same would go for Client Exec and WHMCS. The host gets charged so much per month per license and hosts give the licenses away.

Now consider this, hosts run promo's of 50% off recurring. With that they loose half their payment. Sometimes over $8/mo.

Now, run a promo of a free domain. The customer pays full price and receive a free .com, .net, .org. You pay $8 for their domain and if they leave your host before the year is up you charge them the $8 transfer fee.

Who's comming out ahead?
