I dont "Plan" on using keywords, but i DO add them to my page's meta tags, as well as try and use them throughout the front and sub pages of the site.
For instance, check out these searches for various keywords that I found in my logfiles for my site @ geesh.com:
"Website Templates" (#32 out of 2,380,000 results)
http://www.google.com/search?q=website+templates&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&start=30&sa=N
"Free Website Layout" (#7 out of 1,350,000 results)
http://www.google.ca/search?q=free+website+layout&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&meta=
"PHP Website Templates" (#10 out of 965,000 results)
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=PHP+Website+Templates
"Website Template Download" (#18 out of 898,000 results)
http://www.google.com/search?q=website+template+download&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&start=10&sa=N
I deleted my old logs, but I did have other searches for keywords that had me in #1-#10 in google. (out of 100,000+ results)
Here's a breakdown of my top keywords as searched by users finding my website:
Keyword...........# of times.......% of keywords
templates...........425...................18.6 %
free.....................284 ..................12.4 %
website...............268 ..................11.7 %
template..............166 .................7.2 %
php.....................101...................4.4 %
I think keywords are important. Like I said though, I don't really "plan" a keyword strategy, I just try to use them throughout each article or piece of news on the site.
