Do search engines value standards?

I read an article on some web site where the author stressed upon need to have web sites as per W3 standards in order to get higher listing. Now, i am confused. Is it really the W3 standards which can boost your ranking in Search results, if not more atleast to an extent?

I am not sure about it and have tried to research it, but a few places on net i found answer that confirmed it. Going through their logics, it seemed to be copy/paste of each other's articles.

Kindly share your views on this. If your site is as per W3 standards, does it help your site list higher in search engine rankings?

we recently checked one of our sites with W3C validator and it returned with nearly 100 errors and most of them are ALT tag errors, so as far as i know search engines palce very little value on ALT tags these days hmmmmmmm, but yet we fixed them since it wont do any harm
