do I need SSH account?

hi
I see some webhost offer SSH account in the hosting package.
Can someone tell me what can I do with the SSH account?
What are the typical scenarios where SSH is used?

SSH is only necessary if you need shell access to the server.
In most cases you will not need this. Some program installations require root access to the server but more than likely the host will do the installation for you.
 
I have seen that most companies offer that by request. So if you need that and they trust you as a customer - you will get SSH. At the same time some companies like say Santrex.net have shell acces in the title of main page. Are they sure in anyone that become their customer? Or shell acces can be limited somehow to avoifd global troubleds on the server?
 
The only useful thing with ssh when it comes with shared hosting is wget and some other commands that help you manage/transfer files easily.
