DMOZ is shutting down

What is your take on DMOZ shutting down? I applied to be an editor there years ago, but was rejected with no explanation. I did manage to get a few companies listed there, but it wasn't easy.

I'll probably be more upset the day The NY Times stops publishing the print edition.

DMOZ is without a doubt an icon that has jump-started web classification with hundreds, if not thousands of entrepreneurs rushing to run their own Yahoo!, whether based on DMOZ api or their own. It has served the web well. In terms of SEO impact, I don't think there will be a meaningful effect, since the game has changed so much that a tweet is probably of more value to your business than a listing at this classic catalog.

In a metaphorical way, DMOZ is the newspaper of today's news media.

They used to accept sites I submitted before around 2009. After that nothing. The directory is pointless because they don't even accept anything, not even quality sites that have a lot of traffic, etc.

I swear they were around longer than since '98. I remember submitting websites back in the day and while there was rarely ever traffic from it, it was a great source of SEO power.

As we moved into the 2010+, their SEO influence was less and less and really for the past couple of years, they've been a non-factor.

It's been an interesting journey for them, and I'm surprised someone like Verizon didn't pick it up (in addition to their Yahoo acquisition).

All good things must come to an end.

DMOZ has been for a long time. We no longer require such websites from the past decade DMOZ was probably being used mainly for its SEO power.

Not a shocking coz weird rules and laziness.

Closing company is not a good option, If I was owner then I prefer to convert it to different thing like Knowledge hub.

You summed it up very well.

DMOZ had their time to shine and now things have to move on. I am surprised that they lasted the last 5 years as directory submission have been irrelevant for a long time now.

I will be disappointed. I think even Google uses their database. DMOZ has been around so long it's to the internet like jelly is to peanut butter.

I'm sometimes wanted to build a big directory and in the past I've had a couple that reached a niche, but they take so much work to maintain and keep going and I haven't had the time to devote to it.

I didn't realize Yahoo had been acquired by Verizon, I thought Google had picked up Yahoo at one point.

Surprised an good authority site like DMOZ wasnt bought up by someone that could have monetised it effectively.....had a lot of sites on there too :(
