Dissconnected

Holidays etc seem to be in any industry an increasingly difficult past time to indulge in fully, the past 3 weeks or so I had the fortunate ability to take my holiday up in Scotland disconnected from the world leaving CSN-UK in the capable hands of the fellow directors.

Though that’s not unusual, what seems to bother me is that during say for example a birthday I attended, everyone despite having their days off spent most of the time talking on the phone rather than to each other. Thankfully the phone remained off the entire duration of the trip although forever thinking about something going wrong.

Thus after playing the catch-up game for the past two days I’m wondering more so now if in not just this industry but others, is it just getting more impossible to take any time off? Especially with the increase in company phones, internal and external queries and authorisations on specific company movements.

Just something that seems to be getting more difficult these days even with people able and emplace to cover. Any similar experiences?

I find it hard to take off time. I went on vacation to florida back in june of this year and ended up logging on my computer to check up on my business 2-5 times per day. This industry is very time consuming.

The industry is very time consuming indeed. Not to mention if you mix it into other industries that you do business in as well.

My fiance is about to kill me because I spend most of my time online working on my businesses rather than spending time to relax. I understand the need for relaxation, but I also understand that business is business and right now I am trying to implement strategies so I can take a little time off at least.

When you enter the web hosting industry, keep this in mind. Welcome to the industry that never sleeps. Enough said?

Yeah, my gf gets mad at a lot becuase I am on the comp all the time lol She spends most of her time with me at my house, but I do take the time to take her places. I probably spend 1-2 hours a day taking her to see friends, movie, dinner or what ever she wants to do. I love my business but my girl is just as important so I do all I can to keep her happy and spend time with her :)

I do take a vacation each year with FULL separation. No Cell, No Computer, nothing. Granted on some of my longer trips I actually break out the satellite phone so I have contact should I need it. Usually I'm 60 miles off the coast fishing, so it means ZERO contact unless I have that phone.

I take regular business trips that require driving (I love driving), so while I have contact, I can be 2 or 3 weeks on the road at various conventions and meetings, but still within reach if needed.

I took a trip to England a couple years back and when I got back to the hotel one of the nights I found that my girlfriend had snapped a number of photos (at Stonehenge no less) and me in the foreground working on a satellite phone and a notebook propped open on one of the stones :) Also a few pictures at the Guinness Factory in Ireland and on various rock walls around the country. I didn't have the full staff that I have now, so I was in contact a lot with things happening, but it is amazing how LITTLE freetime anyone does get these days with so much technology!

I'm pretty fortunate to be able to leave work at work, and concentrate on family at home. Of course, we still have the Salon, so I spend my fair share of time managing that as well.
