Determining Bandwidth

How would I check the bandwidth of the hosting package I bought?

I have been into some websites where it loads very slow. I ask the admin or owner if they have the same problem but they said that it works fine with their machine. I assume then that the problem is with their bandwidth.

I don't want my clients or visitors to wait if my website is already up and running because I know the feeling of waiting for so long.

If you mean amount of data transfer, then your allocation should be displayed within your control panel.

If you mean the actual rate of data transfer, then it can vary depending on your location, your connection to the Internet, your server's connection to the Internet, amount of users accessing the server, and so on.

You can see if a service like this gives you the same results you're experiencing. (I don't have much experience with it, but it looks interesting.)

If your web hosting provider has oversold their bandwidth and their channel is tapped your websites might loading slow. There a few other scenarios and one of them is to have the physical or virtual machine overloaded.

The scenario as you've described it is transfer related, either with your personal connection or the provider's. Website optimization will help across the board.

What kind of hosting package do you have and what does your hosting company provide? Is it possible that unlimited bandwidth is a part of this equation somewhere?

Webfreak, you are aright that there are a lot of factors to consider about the data transfer. Thanks for listing some of them. I will look at it to make sure my website run smoothly

HostColor, I'm still on the process of looking for a web hosting company to host my website.

Steve, I know my internet connection is good because I have no problem connecting to other websites besides that website that loads really slow.

Energiz, I would not get any unlimited bandwidth but I'm still on the hunt for a good web hosting company. I prefer getting VPS or dedicated when I got the money to pay for it.

Upload a zip file to your account and then use host-tracker.com to see how fast it loads in different parts of the world. Usually, if you're far away from your host, the bandwidth will be smaller.

If you're seeing a host that have problems you should try to contact them and see what is their response. If they correct the problem, then you probably should go with them (as you saw that they can accept their errors and fix it).

If they don't reply you, then you shouldn't consider them as your host.

Throw up a zip file on your site and download it with wget or similar and see what kind of speeds you are reaching. Should give you some idea about the overall dowload speeds coming off your server.

I've been to a web hosting company and they have a meter on the packages that they offer. You can check the hard disk space, the memory, and the bandwidth that is used. I've only found this in just one web hosting company. I wonder if this feature will be found in all web hosting companies.

Unlimited bandwidth sounds really tempting. But how does unlimited bandwidth actually work? How big do you actually get with this kind of bandwidth? I heard many negative views about this but what about the positive ones?

I fully agree with hoscolor. The only thing that will :help: you is -- Change the hosting provider and go for some reliable service provider

I have been with several unlimited* providers in my earlier days, and let me assure you, none of them are unlimited. In real terms what they are saying is this:

You can use our server as much as you want as long as it does not disrupt the service of our other users. For some places, this is 4% CPU usage, or 12% memory usage, or 200Gigs of bandwidth. You will always find some fine print in their terms of service. They usually won't give you exact details like this, but they do have cut offs. Most of the time they like to word it to where it's at their discretion and they can ban you at will if you are using too much resources.

Stay far far away from anything that says *****unlimited*****.
