Dell vs. Gateway vs. IBM

Shopping for laptops.

I currently own a Dell Latitude laptop. It works well still despite being kicked, stepped on, dropped, and attacked by kittens. The CD-Rom drive doesn't stay in it anymore and the casing is starting to pull apart but it still clunks along.

However, as I don't get to use it that often - I need a new laptop for myself. If I can find a good enough deal I'll buy two.

I've seen some impressing things coming from Gateway lately. Their notebooks are pretty sleek and work well from my experience. Very impressive looking 17" models I've seen around the office.

IBM has a reputation for being durable - and this is true. My work issued laptop is an OLD IBM but it works better and holds together better than the current Dell one I own.

Dell - go with what's good and affordable. Reasonable pricing and features.

I'd value all opinions/experiences and am looking to purchase within the next two months or so.

Vote for one, explain why, or vote for "Other" and provide details. Appreciate it and thanks in advance.

Its been 4 months since I've been after the IBM X series laptop (X40 to be precise). I really love the mobility, durability and security they offer. Not to mention that there is just no other maker that does better machines.

IBM has recently scored the best in all categories starting from marketing to support to quality of the product while Dell has scored the lowest in all same categories (VARBusiness Magazine).

Toshiba and HP both share the 2nd place after IBM.

Also, IBM X40 laptop was also announced to be the top product of 2004 according to editors of eWeek Magazine.

Best,

In the past few months I have had 2 friends each buy a new laptop for themselves ... business & home use ... both have their own companies.

One bought a Toshiba Centrino ... the other HP w/ Pentium 4 ... and each basically the top of the line of the makers laptop lines.

Both are extremely happy with their purchases and, funny enough, they are both considering purchasing another laptop exactly the same.

My knowledge of laptops is a little out of date ... but ... Toshiba used to have the best reputation for durability. But now, I understand, IBM has their own little tricks going on that make theirs even more durable ... but don't quote me on it.

From what I have heard & seen ... if I were to buy a laptop now it would be either Toshiba, IBM or HP.

Toshiba would my personal first choice ... but only because I am a die hard Toshiba products fan ;) My TV, VCR, DVD player & microwave are all Toshiba and never had a problem with any of them ... and the TV & microwave are both 18 years old :) Hahahaha ... almost as old as you John hahahaha

Good luck with your decision.

IBM - It's a no brainer. The ThinkPads are superb.

Toshiba's aren't bad, and are my backup, but nothing comes close to IBM's thinkpads.

Gawd. Just posted on Slickdeals: $500 coupon off select Dell laptops - namely the 700m Inspiron a 4lbs laptop. Anyone wanna loan me a grand? Hadn't been plannin' to buy a laptop this soon...will have to get approval before I can from my better half :) 'Less anyone wants to give me a loan :)

Thanks for all the opinons thus far. Like I said, not plannin' to buy for another month or two...maybe the Dell deal will inspire some others to offer better deals :)

I wouldn't go so far as to say a no brainer Simon.
I personally think that dollar for dollar Dell is your best bet.

I am loving my Inspiron 9200. It's a little big but not heavy at all considering its 17" screen. Works like a charm.
