Hello all,
First time i ever have been here.

My question is probably dumb but i wanna ask it. I here abotu these dedicated servers adn some that you can install software if needed. Well do some servers let you install hosting software for games or utilities for scuh games? Somewhat like it's my own compuiter but connected to the internet like super fast.

That's my question in a nutshell.thanks

Welcome to Hosting Discussion suppawok! Glad to have you here!

Chances are, that more often than not, you'll find that its totally up to your host. Dedicated as it may be, some hosts are still a little bit stupid about their servers!

Colocation has always been my thing and most dedictaed providers will already support the software necessary for your stuff...you'll probably be better off looking for a provider who specialises in the gaming server-type you want to provide.

Again, good to have you here!
Regards,

Dont worry about the validity of your question. Here at HostingDiscussion, any question which has entailed even the slightest bit of thought is worth a response or two. I hope you are enjoying your time here and look forward to seeing more of your posts!

Its depends on the company that your leasing the server from. Most will allow you to upload any programs you need/wabt if you do it your self and that they are legal in nature.

On dedicated server you got root access I dont feel at that time you have need to have any kind of installation restriction ... thats what a dedicated server means, to use it for your purpose... unless and untill its legal.

You should be able to do anything with your server as long as it is not illigal or against their TOS, for example ThePlanet does not allow IRC Networking meaning you can have IRC but you cannot branch out (Connect to other networks)

Some companies will not allow certain scripts on their servers - usually scripts with known, unfixed security problems like FormMail. Many also disallow IRC - some disallow any kind of IRC programs on servers within their network.

More and more companies are now targeting people who want to install games on their servers - that's targeting for sales prospects, not targeting to shut them down. Just read over the TOS carefully, ask questions about anything you don't understand, and always look for a dedicated server provider who's good at communicating with you.
