Dedicated IP address + SSL cert or 3rd party?

Hello,

I am designing an e-commerce website for a small business and am in the process of choosing a web host. I need to know if it is typically more cost effective to buy a dedicated IP address and SSL or use paypal or another 3rd party.

Thanks!

For budget conscious small businesses, PayPal is certainly a cost effective solution. A dedicated IP and SSL are only part of the other solution - you also need to then be PCI compliant yourself.

Yeah, going with a SSL will give your business more credibility and will also make your site a bit more secure.

If you're starting out, keeping costs to a minimum are always a concern, and in that regard people often choose the PayPal route. This works for many.

Personally when I start online stores and other businesses I usually end up investing money rather than going with bare minimum. This means getting a hosting account that supports ecommerce, a dedicated IP, an SSL Certificate, a host that's PCI Compliant, a merchant account for Visa & Mastercard, the DBA & Bank Account, and depending on the operation, Incorporation of the business.

Will PayPal cover the bases off the start - yes, but if you're putting money into your business, going with a merchant account and SSL Certificate etc would be the route I'd pick personally.

If your are collecting any kind of personal information, such as a client name, address and phone number then it is advisable to use a dedicated IP and your own domain specific SSL certificate. Dedicated IP's are not expensive and SSL's start at $13, then you can still use PayPal or another 3rd party to process the financial transactions.

best of luck,
chris

This is excellent advice for start ups. For existing brick and mortar businesses looking to embrace ecommerce, PayPal is a viable cost effective solution. If you select PayPal Pro and process transactions on your site, you again need to be PCI compliant, as well as your host.

There are a lot of good web hosting companies that are offering Free dedicated IP and Free Private SSL certificate with their web hosting pakages. So you should go with that hosting company that offers quality web hosting with your required features.

Best Regards

Hi,

SSL certificates are must for sites conduction E-commerce. They increase confidence among customers.

You should go for a SSL that suits your requirement. Rapidssl is quite well known for entry level sites as they are very cheap and also provides 128/256 bit encryption.

If you got any confusion regarding selection or any other query on SSL, you can surely let me know.

Dedicated ip is needed for SSL to work perfectly for your domain. It would ensure that the domain is hosted on a separate ip than the other ip's where multiple domainnames are hosted on same ip and the SSL would become a shared SSL in such cases.

Yes, there is no reason to not have SSL to secure your web site if you collect data and with SSL prices dropping you can get one affordably if not for free by a web host.

PayPal is a great way to start to accept payments, and you should probably accept that anyways as a lot of users do have a PayPal account however you are missing out on sales with out your own merchant account by processing CC's directly. If you do go this route do make sure to have fraud protection like MaxMind.
