Data Center

Have you ever thought of opening a data center? If you have, what did you decide and why?

I personally would LOVE to start one up myself, but I don't know if I will ever have enough knowledge or the money to do it at first.. it would really be something awesome to have though, maybe some day :)

Hey Gordy,

We've thought about it, but man, theres alot of things to consider...

The costs are alot higher then we originally thought, and not sure its worth it unless your recurring revenue is REALLY high...

but...when we can, we will.... same reason as you, we think it would be awesome and open up all sorts of avenues for growth...

I think it could be successful where I am, since there are no other datacenters, but at the same time, not too too many people.. so it would be tough..

Im sure it would be a huge success if a datacentre was opened where I am (Belfast)

Only one within miles and its private, so no one else can use it except the company that owns it.

There are a lot of warehouses opening and I think they could be developed to be more secure etc. to house a DC.

I think a lot of people would be interested in using it but again, cost is the main problem.

I have never looked into it fully because Im sure it will cost far too much to afford.
You would have to have a good income before you even start so it can help you cover the costs of setting it all up

Have I ever thought about it? Past tense no. Am I thinking about it? Present tense yes. Future tense certainly.
Having a datacenter, unfortunately, is very difficult and very expensive. I fear, however, unfortunately, that possibly in two or maybe even three years, I'll be kicked out of the datacenter which I use now and may be forced to start my own small one.

Exactly. But you must remember, you cannot open up a datacenter yourself unless you have a lot servers, in the thousands even - possibly 200 cabinets which is a lot of servers. ;)
Per cabinet, one can earn gross between $8,400 and $42,000 - so therefore with 200 cabinets you can be making up to $8,400,000 per month. Then of course, with that you'd pay fees for everything. However, even with $8,400,000 you may not be able to have a giant datacenter like LayerOne or that of RackShack or Hurricane Electric - you would however be able to get a nice small datacenter to house your 200 cabinets and then of course you have to pay tax, employee fees, benefits and so on... meaning in the end your pay cheque may not be as high as you hoped in the end. ;)

Where I am in France, it'd do very well to build a datacenter. However, I don't, unfortunately, have the funding now but should do within a few years. Although, thankfully I do own a 15 acre plot of land in France meaning I do have plenty of space for a nice small datacenter. :D :D

I think opening a Data Center with a bunch of people who are willing to invest not only their money but also time then it would be worth it. I would definitely be interested in knowing this bunch of people who are looking to open one up :)

I created a business plan for a Datacenter in the future for my company. However just to get it started and running for 6 months we were looking at $32,450 which is a lot of money to cough up front.

You have to remember you need a good line (we were looking at 3 Tier1 lines from MCIworldcom, Sprint, AOL Time Warner) each were around $450-600 including loop.

Then you need a nice hefty series of firewalls ($4,000+)
Then you need some office space (We are looking at 2,000sqft for $1300 a month)
Then you need backup power (Diesel generator = $1,200)
You would need to invest in about 20 servers ($600+ per machine)
You would need to setup about 5 workstation areas for yourself + staff ($8,000 for computers, software, phone lines desks, chairs)
You will also have a power bill of about $450 per month

So unless you have 20+ servers running with a monthly increase of 5-10 machines you wont be making any profit at all.

I think if about 10 - 20 people joined together this would work...it would be funny if we all joined in as the Hosting-Talk Data Center...you never know :)

Nice plan Jonathan, think it might take a bit more to get started though.
Paying employees would take most of the money if you have a lot, and if you need experienced hardware and server admin that can cost quite a bit.
Then your support techs.
Theres a lot to count up really.

You never know what can happen in the future Darly ;)

That would be really neat.. I really really want to either own my own DC or be highly ranked in one when I get older..

Well in terms of paying employees you wont have to worry about it to begin with because the investors should have some knowledge in maintaining it which would cut down costs drastically
