cPanel Licensing Problems: Is my server provider the one to blame?

Hello guys.

I have a small issue, well potentially quite a large one.
Because I'm feeling calm, despite the pressure, I will explain in detail exactly what's going on.

Right, a few days ago I bought a VPS with a 200gb hard drive, 2tb monthly bandwidth, and a 2.4GHz Intel Xeon dual core CPU, with no CPU limits and full root access. Also included was a free cPanel license and free Zamfoo. I bought the VPS from Serverbing for $55/month.

Now, the cPanel license appears to be active. I can still log into cPanel/WHM and use it without seeing any error messages.

So I was quite surprised today when I tried to order an RvSiteBuilder PRO VPS license and it told me that my server IP did NOT have an active cPanel license. A little shocked at this, I used the cPanel license verification tool and found this:

"expired/deactivated by admin@buycpanel.com on 2011-06-02 21:50:55."

Now, I'm not the one responsible for paying for the license. It was included free in my VPS package so I'm presuming it's Serverbing's responsibility. I tried to contact them over live chat but they were not online. So I tried to submit a support ticket but couldn't get through to their system, and I don't know why.

I don't wish to accuse Serverbing of anything, just in case it's not their problem. I am a little skeptical though, why is my license not active?! If I am running an illegal server then I will be very very angry. I am not going to get sued for another company's responsibility. So please help me out here guys, what do you think the problem is?

You can use the cPanel license verification tool: http://www.cpanel.net/apps/verify/

and enter my server IP address: 212.7.201.59

to see full details of what's going on. It all started when I got this error message when trying to buy an RvSiteBuilder PRO license:

"Sorry, 212.7.201.59 is not an active cPanel server. You can verify cPanel license here."

How long ago was the license issued? How long has your ticket with Serverbing been unanswered for?

If it's been less than 24 hours for the license, give it a few more hours and then check again.

The license was issued about 5-7 days ago.
It was listed as active yesterday because I tried to order RvSiteBuilder Pro yesterday and it went through. I just decided to not proceed with the order as I wanted to think about whether to order it just yet or wait a little longer.

After making my decision, I went back there to buy the RvSiteBuilder Pro license this morning only to find that I apparently no longer had a valid cPanel license. I then checked the cPanel license verifier and yes, my license is not active!

For your information, the RvSiteBuilder website will not let you buy an RvSiteBuilder license unless your server IP has an active cPanel license. If it doesn't (i.e. like mine!) then it won't let you buy the license. The annoying thing is, though, that my license should be active!

According to the records it was deactivated last night.
Serverbing are currently looking into it. I hope they get the issue sorted out asap.
I've also asked them for a discount on my monthly server bill. Hopefully they'll give me that too.
As this is an inconvenience to me. Also, this is not the first problem I've had with them.
I also was supposed to get a 3.0GHz dual core Intel Xeon VPS but ended up with a 2.4GHz dual core Intel Xeon.
I requested that they either give me what I paid for or knocked $5 off my monthly bill.
To be honest, 2.4Ghz dual core is enough for me at the moment, I'm probably just being greedy.
However, I would like that discount as I was supposed to be paying for a 3.0Ghz. And for that reason, I want it. ;)

Zack if you've only just recently reported the matter to your host then why are you so worried, at least give them the opportunity to rectify before complaining about it there?

p.s. having read this back, it sounds a little blunt and harsh, this is certainly not the intended tone!

I understand.
I am just a tricky customer sometimes.
But in this case, I think I have that right to be so.
I contacted them about this 6 hours ago now.
And still heard nothing back.
I wouldn't mind if they were still working on it.
But I haven't heard from them in 6 hours.

To be quite frank, I am not at all pleased.
And I would still very much like that discount.
I just hope I'm not forced to find somewhere else as it's always a hassle moving around. I'd like to stay.
I would just like the service I'm paying for or I'll seriously regret saying "I'd like to stay".

I will give them some more time, but I'm not happy. :(

Give them some time to do the cPanel License problem. My free license also took time to switch from trial to paid. Try GenVPS their plans come with free cPanel too. With them right now pretty awesome and awesome support!

Actually, mine was a paid license right from the start. Meaning that I should never have had this problem.

Anyway, discussion over guys! The license is now active again. Thanks for your comments guys. :)

I will TRY to be a little more patient in future. ;)

after looking at your license
Being that Serverbing is not a cpanel partner (they are purchasing it from a third party) its going to take them a bit more time to resolve cpanel issues :agree:

Also since you submitted your ticket in the middle of the night (judging by your post being submitted at 5:30am) even if ServerBing had support staff working the ticket I do not believe BuyCpanel does much support in the middle of the night so the ticket that ServerBing submitted to them probably sat till morning.

I am glad you got it all worked out.

They might not have paid their bill, they don't always get a fresh license, so they might have to pay it.

There could be an issue that buycPanel could have had, but generally not the case.

They could have changed it to use on another server they have (some do that from time to time)
Or there could be another reason, but generally it will be sorted in 24 hours I would say.

Technically, I don't really know what Xeon 2.4GHz they are giving you but sometimes it might be an even better processor than your intended 3.0GHz. Unless you could check which processor it is, there's not much way in knowing which is what.

Then again, I would have made a fuss over the wrong processor given. It would have made me really unhappy over it and well... if they claim it is human error, I totally DO NOT agree coz you need to be extra careful on things like this as it is a trust your customer give to you.

About the cPanel, it might be that they accidentally deactivated it by mistake or maybe they just forgot to renew the license. Either way, I doubt buycPanel would make such mistake as their system is totally automated.

Frankly, I would advice you to be wary of your host. Do not really trust them too much anymore after things like that happening.

Take care, have a nice day!
