Copyscape

In the midst of all my business I've been quite busy & completely negated to check http://copyscape.com for rips on my work. This is something I usually do quite often, but once again it slipped my mind.

In the last few weeks I've come across two different sites who've stolen my content. http://hostxweb.com/vps.html taken from http://www.tjphippen.com/projects/vpsguy/ and http://www.hosting-asap.com from http://syg8.com

I started this new thread first, to warn others of potential stolen information from your site, that you should monitor using copyScape as best you can, and second to put this out there publicly.

You know a company isn't going anywhere when they steal, but also when they use privacy on their domains.. LOL :smash: Just had to rant a bit a guess. This isn't the first time this has happend to me(check WHT) and sure it won't be the last.

Thanks for the info on Copyscape siforek.

It is important to ensure that no one rips off your work.

Also, for privacy on those domains: try and visiting the website (usually PrivacyProtect.org IIRC) and requesting the domain owner information.

Good luck with getting the stolen work off their sites. :)

Well in my experience there's no absolute way to do it. You've just got to monitor things. I've considered the whole "protected by copyscape" thing, but it's a bit tacky for my taste.

Content is one thing, I'm just glad I haven't had to deal with design theft lately(knock on wood). :D

I've been seeing a lot of design rips lately, actually whole sites with minor changes. I know Sarora was ripped just recently before they sold out.

A few years ago a site of mine was completely ripped. They only changed the logo, name, and ups the prices. Funny thing was that they forgot to remove the html comment saying "designed/developed by tj phippen" and it ultimately ruined their business once they were exposed.

The first time I got ripped I was discreet about it and tried to handle it in private, but now I'm not messing around. If I find others stealing my hard work I immediately report them.. No warning, nothing. They don't deserve it.

Site rips are increasingly common if it is for fraud or just due to basic lack of design. PayPal and others have more famously been ripped in the past although no Google clones yet. Due to the open nature of the web it seems it’s too easy for people to rip a site rather than design or even purchase one.

That said various people who rip sites then post them via various other illegal forums, some more well known than others and then a vast amount of people begin to chop change and reuse many different designs.

Thankfully during a day when the radio refused to change from the local BBC radio station, blaring out every other half hour was a forum often considered to be the largest forum of an illegal nature. Whose owners (4) have been sentenced to 12 months with 2million GBP worth of compensation to pay to the various companies.

Unfortunately there is no real way to protect a page or its content, that isn’t easily got around.

Fortunately, we have not had our site ripped yet. And we have received a lot of compliments on it. (knock on wood)!

We've had everything from our logo stolen, content on our site, content from our forums and blogs, our knowledgebase and even one very brave person that even stole my name (and names of some of my staff) and posted on their site that Hands-on was shutting down and that myself and a select group of staff had started a new hosting busienss :) Ballsy!!!!

Digital content can be protected (images) using watermarks, or using the digimarc.com software. I've used this in the past for some of our published work - really helps in legal cases.

If your content is ever stolen, let google know via this DMCA Violation tools and they'll contact the host and sandbox the sites. Google is VERY helpful (as is copyscape). Contacting the user directly usually resolves things, contacting their host is advised also. Posting publicly I'm not big on doing (unless I've tried a number of contact methods) but it is stolen content - MY content.

I don't think there is perfect solutions for this, it just annoying when I find people are stealing my few blog posts and boldly using them in their sites and blogs and get indexed by search engine. They subscribe through my different blogs and keep track on newer posts to steal. :uhh:

I wasn't aware of copyscape.
Thanks for the info on that.

I totally agree with you when you say go public without giving them any warning.

However you do it is up to you, but really you can do whatever you want. The police don't call up a bank robber and say "please give the money back". I've been the victim of enough content, design & source theft that I have absolutely no tolerance for it anymore. If you steal from me I'll do everything in my power to rectify the situation.

If it's worth my time to feel like justice was served, I'll go to lengths of ruining all a thief's credibility, reputation, and ultimately their entire business, and have multiple times in the past. Take canadu & spookedout for example..
