Companies Taking Your Searched Domains

I've been looking around places and found a interesting topic. I'm not sure how "true" it is, but it's something to think about. Seems like some domain registrars.. actually look through the names we search. If they find something they like, they will register it quickly. Therefore if you try to register it elsewhere, the domain is already register by the company.. say godaddy.

Has this ever happen't to anyone before?

This has happened to one of my partners before. He was searching for a domain name on a non-reputable whois website during the brainstorming session and practically during the couple of hours of us fishing around few very precise names, all 3 names he searched for the most were registered during that time.

I am confident companies like GoDaddy or NameCheap would never hijack the names similarly only because that's not how they are making money, nor it is in their best interest. But smaller sites might get exposed to this kind of practice. My advice to anyone is to only check for domain availabilities through reputable companies like NameCheap or GoDaddy and never check for domain names on sites you are not familiar with.

Good advice Art. I have had that happen once. After that I always searched for names on Godaddy. U have done it with hundreds of names and never had one that I tried to buy taken before I could get it.

Never had such problems with GoDaddy or NameCheap... I used both intensively. Switching to eNom now though.

Yeah I had an experience with this however I’ve find ways to search discreetly.
