************** Colocated, any good?

I came across **************'s Dedicated Colocated server plans (http://hosting.**************.com/superb.php) for ~$100 per month. I'm currently paying monthly for their reseller plan, but I'm just wondering if that plan is any good because I have plans of upgrading the website whom I work for (http://www.gsrg.org/) which is a non-profit organization to a high speed dedicated server. But before I suggest this I need to know if its any good. So far it sounds good because its a colocated server from ThePlanet.com Datacenters but its cheaper than the listed prices on ThePlanet, inc, so I need to know if there's any defect or anything. So far I know that it seems like a good deal because it's operated and monitored by RW Networks, and has tech support, etc.

Good rule of thumb. If the company is added to the forum's "Naughty Word" list...I'd probably stay clear of their services.

Exactly, you took the words out of my mouth. :)

Bearing in mind gsrg doesnt appear to have actually been launched yet, *why* do you feel you need a "high speed dedicated server" ?

Just interested in the thought processes really, as I'm forever hearing from clients/potentials comments like "but hosting plan x only has 200Gb/month of bandwith [they mean data-transfer - we can blame hosting company advertising for a whole generation of illiterates] and my site will have lots of downtime with so little bandwidth" which on investigation, shows that their site uses maybe 10% of that if anything (and this "mythical" link between downtime and transfer - where people get that idea from I have no idea) !

Not always true. While it may be a warning sign to make sure you do lots of background research into, it does not mean the companys in a bad situation.

The company may have simply broken a rule (or two) on these forums to get on the "black list". I personally wouldn't use a company that has their name cloaked on a forum. I re-call they had their name cloaked on WebHostingTalk a while ago, too. IIRC, their data center is in Virginia therefore, you could look into someone that has space in Equinix Ashburn there.

Best of luck.

I agree. It just means that they don't follow rules, do not take the initiative to read the rules, or feel that the rules do not apply to them. In addition, most of the time when a url is blocked here, it typically means that they were spamming.

There are exceptions I would imagine. However, generally speaking, when a user breaks the rules at HD, their URL/domain, is left alone, unless the mods have a reason to block it. Usually it's simply the user that is banned, warned, etc.

Now then, using the typical scenerio for a blacklisted url at HD, would you really want to host with a spammer?
