Chosing The Right Hosting Company

This topic is devoted to something that every one should know. It's mainly to those looking for web hosting and not those selling although it's a useful peace of information that allot of people don't know.

We have all seen them... the top 10 hosting company ad's like this http://www.top-10-web-hosting.com/ Now allot of people who see these sign up with hosting companies like this because they think that they are the best in money saving, support, features, or what ever else. Although this is very far from true.

The cold hard truth is... sites like http://www.top-10-web-hosting.com/ are not trying to help you pick the "best host" they are trying to make money. These guys make money by putting links to these "top 10 hosting companies" on there site and ever body who comes from there site to a hosting company and sign's up.... allot of the money you just spent goes right back into that website that took you to that host.

So next time you see these websites; don't buy it.

Just a useful piece of info for those who did not know.

Best Regards,

You've got it right. Most of these top 10 sites are bogus. Hosting companies pay for the top spots...

Finding a great host isn't hard though. You just have to do a little digging.

Hi Cody,

You are right about so called top 10 websites, but you probably know that it is all about advertising. If any particular website does not provide user driven reviews, it is hard to trust them.

A piece of advice. When you don't want to "transfer influence" or don't want to contribute to someone, just don't post links to their website. Their tops of sites like this one and all of the are the same!

While the cost of website hosting has gone down dramatically in recent times and you likely can find a reliable hosting company for under 7 dollars per month for a small site, there is a scam that some shady hosting companies use which is to overload the amount of shared hosting accounts. For your small monthly fee you may get a large amount of space and bandwidth, but the host counts on the fact that you are only going to use a small percent of it, so they will put more shared accounts on a single server than the server could handle if everyone used up all of their allocated capacity.

This means that with this type of account if someone else who had a shared account went over their bandwidth limit, it could bring your website down. Not a safe bet for someone who wants constant uptime.

Welcome to Hosting Discussion, Raphael Nirav.
Certainly, there are risks associated with some budget hosting providers. You just need to assign value to your site, and select a host that matches your values.

I've always heard it takes money to make money. While that's not completely true, it sure helps with advertising budgets. :D

TOTALLY AGREE WITH WHAT YOU ARE SAYING, I NO FOR A FACT WE PROVIDE A BETTER LEVEL OF SERVICE THAN SOME OF THE COMPANYS ON THE TOP 10 LISTS BUT THEY GET THE CUSTOMERS BECAUSE PEOPLE BELEIVE THEY ARE THE TOP 10 COS THE LIST SAYS SO. ITS ALL A BIT WRONG!!!:smash:

Whats wrong if they are making money with any kind of affiliate program.

And the people who are investing money to increase their business through some kind of listing are serious about their business. So nothing is wrong in that.

Yes I agree! These "top 10 hosters" pay for their ranking....and they are not always the best. Also, just because hosts have bad reviews (lots of haters out there) doesn't mean they are a bad host.

I did my own research and talked to others using the web host that I chose (HostICan) and it was well worth the effort I put into it.

These bigger web hosting companies have huge marketing budgets that squish everyone else out.

It's really difficult to find a good host. I remember when I was looking for hosts on several occasions and doing lots of research on the web, there are so many hosts that are misleading with their "unlimited". I used to think that was the standard, but once I found out what it really meant, I never saw it as a good business practice. I went with several decent companies that were rated highly on the rating websites, and what I found was that mostly their customer service was good, but their claims were very misleading. I realize most people don't need "unlimited" space or use very much space; so, they only use the few people that actually buy into the claim and end up using what was advertised.

If I was looking for a host these days, I would probably read through more of the forum communities for information looking for good and bad reviews. I would probably completely disregard those ranking websites.
