What Does Your Site Require?

Touching on the point above, the first thing that needs to be determined is your individual needs and what you are looking to accomplish. For instance, do you want a personal website? An e-commerce site? Does it require a blog or other additional software? These answers play a major part in determining the company best suited for your needs.

Cost Factor

The second factor that needs to be considered is cost. You need to establish a workable budget as the price for service ranges widely from free to very expensive. Free hosting offers the obvious benefit of not having to pay for your site but there are several limitations. In this environment you generally have little to no support as well as a lack of features and security. Furthermore, a free host may litter your page with third-party advertisements which could certainly blemish your credibility. If you plan to start a business online, we strongly recommend staying away from free hosting.

Storage and Bandwidth

Disk space and bandwidth are two of the most essential features of any web hosting plan. You will undoubtedly require a certain amount of space for your files be it simple documents or images. Bandwidth is also critical as it has a tremendous impact on your site’s performance. The more people you have coming in, the more bandwidth your site will require. The most important thing to consider here is growth. Don’t go with a low capacity just because it is cheap, and never buy into a plan just because it offers an impressive amount of storage and bandwidth. Find out what is reasonable for your needs and pick something that will support your site on into the future.

Reliability and Support

Last but not least, you should look for signs of reliability in a web host. If the company can’t be relied on, all of those attractive features and incredibly low price will not mean a thing. A reliable host will ensure that your site is always available and that visitors will enjoy a smooth performance. Keep in mind that slow loading pages and downtime are a surefire way to lose your visitors. Quality customer support ties in closely with reliability and is something that should never be overlooked. Look to do business with a company that offers support in various means whether it’s a combination of phone and email or phone and live chat. As anything could go wrong, you need the reassurance that someone is available 24/7 to address your concerns.

it's also important to go through the web site of the host to find out details like how long the host has been around, up time commitment, any well known sites that are being hosted by this provider. These should provide you with a sufficient amount of confidence in the first place to deal with this specific web host.

I second what jeffbolt said. Researching the company of choice is the first thing you should do before buying any package from them.

here is a little article I made about choosing a web host. Enjoy

When you are searching for a web hosting company it can be a daunting task with so many web hosting companies out in the web universe today. Here are the top 10 questions ask before choosing a web hosting company.
1. Space - How much disk space will you require/need?
2. Bandwidth - Cover your needs and allow for expansion if needed.
3. Budget – Set a realistic budget for yourself. How much are you willing to spend? lowest price too highest. Being a little flexible on your price will give more hosting choices.
4. Support - Do they provide at least 24/7 Support Desk? Support is very important, this is a must. You should have access to support 24 hours a day. Test the support desk. Choose anytime of the day or night and contact the support desk to test response times, ask any questions you might have. Do you need phone support or live chat support. ask these questions before you sign up with a web host.
5. Don’t forget to read the web hosting company TOS & privacy policy.
6. Features - Ask yourself what features you would like to have. Do you want one-click-scripts installers like fantastico or installatron? Do you want a website builder? Do you require a money-back guarantee? What kind of uptime does the web host provide? Anything above 98% is considered pretty well.
7. Control Panels - Do you want Cpanel, DirectAdmin, or Plesk?
8. Are there any setup charges, account migration charges or any hidden charges?
9. Try to get test download file so as to crosscheck their network speed.
10.Do they offer any coupons or special deals?

Hope this helps you out in your journey to finding a web host.

The following are the 5 ways to differentiate a best out of the worst-

1. Traceable Testimonies – There are several web hosting companies providing a testimony page. The main feature of so-called good web hosting companies is that they will actually link to the person who ‘said’ what is posted. In case there is no linking it means that the hosting company simply made up the testimony. So if one is worried for the success of his/her business, he/she should not get involved with a company with doubtful reliability.

2. Testing Quick Response Claims – Its very easy and recommendable to test the response of a web hosting company i.e. just by emailing them. One should check carefully that the host he/she is going to choose should provide an email address or at least a feedback form. In order to check the effectiveness of support and response one should simply ask a question about their service, and should check how fast they respond. Thereafter one should compare that with what they have ‘advertised’ as their response time. Thus the truth will be visible soon.

3. Online Help or Ticketing System – there are several hosting companies offering online ticketing/helpdesk. For the start it’s enough to find that one’s host is having this feature.

4. Sense of Community – There is still possibilities that good web hosts have problems. In case of honest web hosts they are open and quick to resolve them. There are several hosting companies offering online forums i.e. a place for their customers and potential customers to post questions, comments, testimonies, and complaints online. Thus the simple criterion to select a good company is that really good hosting companies will not only answer these questions, but will also supply educational posts that may answer similar future questions.

5. WHOIS – there are several links available to guide users. One such is www.whois.sc, which provides a lot of information about one’s web host. Besides providing technical information, it also tells how many websites are running on that server. One should always keep in mind that more websites doesn’t always equal better company. Thus it’s really important to check that the server isn’t bogged down.

Another utility of this is that it is a good place to make sure that the host isn’t on any blacklists. By blacklist it means that there are documented reports of spam coming from that server, which is not at all good for one’s business.

there are a lot of issues when selecting hosts thes days and most of the suggestions for "rules" as it where for selecting a host are very valid and i would reccommend the use of as there are a lot of "cowboys" in every industry and a large large number of hosts will go to any length to create review sites and even forums just to validate their story.

99.99% uptime sla or similar agreement would be an additional recommendation and also lookout for SSL certificate use on all transactions or transfeer of information.

i personally recommend to host your website with well-known companies, and check the money back guarantee which is helpful some times,

2most important thing in web hosting is Tech support and Reliability ,
are they offer 24/7 or TOLL-Free phone support ?

another thing is ease of use really,i prefer work only with c-panel,take attention to these too, check their CP before try,

My advice is when you are opting for a web hosting decide on the basic question.. Decide on the bandwidth you require and web space you need and the services you need. Decide how much you can spend and go for a host. Thus you can save a lot of money

Hi,

May I ask what URL you have hosted with them? :)

Looks like it's time for our semi-annual spam from ************.
Perhaps it's time to censor the phrase ************ not just the website.

Just in time... I am now in the stage of choosing the hosting company for my firs website.
I am considering godaddy, hostgator and hostmonster, hostgator is leading for me. :)

Thanks for all the tips and advices, it really helps.

i use hostgator

I have used Hostgator as my web host for over two years now and have been very very impressed with them. Firstly they're very cheap but still give me more web hosting space and bandwidth than I'll ever need, the ability to host unlimited websites, a 99.9% uptime guarantee and great customer support.
:D

spinit has moved to dedicated server on hostgator, and their service has been great. We have had no issues at all, cept a few hiccups from the move, but they had them fixed within an hour. Uptime and speed has been great.
