Cable Crimp

How fast (on average) do you crimp a cable? Usually it takes me 5 minutes or less to pull the cable out to the desired length, chop, strip, line up, cut, slide connector on, CRIMP, and test.

Looking back on...past month of crimping (Jan) out of the probably 50 cables I crimpped I can remember having 3 connectors that I had to redo - tested bad.

How about yourself? I know when I first started crimpping cables my statistics were DRASTICALLY reversed - 50 connectors bad, 3 good and took probably 20 minutes/cable :)

Well, same process, different industry....

When I used to DJ, I had learned to get it done in about 2-3 mins.

I learned to do it fast, because on quite a few occassions, I had packed everything in the vehicle except for the preset cables, and had to make new ones within mins before the party started.

It will typically take me 2-3 mins to start a new cable, have it ready, and then setup the rest of the equipement (consisting of 4 15" speakers, 2 10" speakers, AMP, Mixer, and Lighting) in a total of 5-6 mins. When I have no need to rush, it will typically take me about 10-15 mins.

Back when I did my CCNA I was always having to remake cables. But recently I have had much better luck. There always seems to be one wire that doesent want to touch the end. ;)

I used to manage 10-12 an hour - length largely irrelevant.

Having "template" lengths of all sizes to pull off the reel against helps, quality connectors (not the 100 for $14.95 ones) and decent stripping and crimping tools are well worth the extra.

One thing i do wish is that I knew how to do fibre terminations - *lots* of business around laying fibre at the moment.
