Boxing Day

Does anyone know the meaning of Boxing Day? Hey; I'm not complaining, it's a great national holiday for some of us after abit too much Alcohol and too much turkey.

I don't know the meaning of Boxing Day, but consumer aggressiveness has gone over the top this year...

I went to Future Shop in the middle of the day just to find a 20-minute line-up outside of the store. The inside mayhem delivered no better news - everything I wanted to get was sold out, thrown around the store, mixed up with other items... I got out in 10 minutes empty-handed. That's just crazy.

Yeah ... but the deals when you got them were usually pretty great. :)

A friend of mine stood in line from 7 AM for their 10 AM opening ... at our local Future Shop. He got approx $10,000 worth of electronics for about $4,000 ... apparently. Total mayhem in the store ... but he latched onto a sales guy & kept hold of him until he had all he wanted.

Future Shop discounts were only active on certain items, and unfortunately (or luckily) those I was after did not have any discount on them.

Not to mention that I would never wake up at 7 AM and stand 3 hours in line just to get in the store. I'd rather get it the next day. Unless of course I know for a fact I will get those kind of savings like your friend got. :)

I never really understood this one. I guess I would have to live in the UK and or Canada to understand better.

In the US there is shopping hype after Thanksgiving with Christmas being the grand finale. Is it not like that in the UK/Canada? Does it all happen on Thanksgiving? I know Canadians and UK Citizens celebrate Christmas...

UK folk don't celebrate thanksgiving. I'm not sure if those Canadians do either.

Traditionally, the big rush was before christmas for buying stuff at 'normal' pricing (from beginning of November) and after Xmas, shops had huge discount sales to get rid of everything they couldn't sell. Recently in the past few years, the sales have been starting earlier and earlier in the UK due to rising costs (interest rates going up, electricity bills doubling, gas bills increasing etc....) and so people don't want to spend or buy as much - so the stores make things cheaper and start their sales earlier to make sure people clear out their shelves ;)

Canadians have Thanksgiving in October.

There is no particular day that starts the holiday buying season but generally after we get Halloween out of the way it becomes Christmas season.

I did all of my shopping online this year and if there are any great boxing day/New Years sales I will be getting them online as well.
I have no desire to hang out with the masses for 3 hours to get into a store to save a few bucks, especially when the savings usually comes in the form of rebates you have to wait 2 or 3 months for.
