Best Video Format

What is the best video format, .AVI, .MPG, .ASF etc..

I currently have all my videos in .ASF format but am looking for something better, can somebody help me out.. I would also prefer to keep them small, but if a larger format is better, I will switch..

And, what is a good editing program for editing videos?

Unfortunately, I have zero knowledge about video formats or video editing software...sorry!

For whomever answers, though, I'd be interested in learning about why one format is better than another. Is it compression scheme? Playback quality? Whicheth?

DivX and Xvid are popular methods of compression now. I would suggest visiting this site for more information:
