Bad Decisions

I don't usually bring up other forums here, but WHT has sunk to a new low.

They now have forced advertising links in posts and signatures.

Now a person who has a signature with WHT can potentially have their signature link to a competitor because of their system.

For instance, if you have the phrase "dedicated servers" in the signature a link is produced that directs the user to "TheWhir.com" paid dedicated server reviews.

Sad.

Michael, I just looked over WHT and could not find a note anywhere about this. Where have you seen this? Is this already in action? Shouldn't there have been an official announcement made about this innovation?
Maybe Dan would be able to comment, he is a moderator there as well.

As you know Art I am not a welcome guest over there.
Maybe the links only exist if you are not logged in.

In that case I revise my original post.
If members are not burdened with the forced ads I don't see an issue with it.

That is why I could not see it. But I think an announcement should still have been made to tell members how their personal space was used.

That is true Art. But I can see what they are trying to do, make more money. But if you check out the advertising rates on their site it seems they should be making alot already. If they get too greedy it might alienate some of their members. Of course that would benifit competing forums, like this one.

Well, I have nothing against it, it's the leading forum when it comes to webhosting at the moment. And it also creates lots of chances for graphic/website designers to sell their products and offer their services.

I wonder if that affects search engines in any way. That could bring about confusion for people searching for a company. Interesting...

The problem is that I know that many members do not necessarily log in when visiting the forum. I am always logged in so it doesn't affect me. I logged out to see what you were talking about. Personally, if I were a member who regularly visited the site without logging in, it would bug me to see those mouseover links. And it should bug those who post as well.

Personally, I think WHT is over the top with their incessant efforts to add revenue streams. Enough already. What the heck, why not go all out and start adding pop ups and pop unders??

I can only agree. Now, while not very obvious, there's a "Remove IntelliTXT Ads" link at the bottom of the page.
