Automated Billing Got Me Again

Am I alone in forgetting to move my hosting, or forgetting that I have a bill coming due? I never remember till I get that email through telling me that my card has been debited-shockingly £64 for six months. I know that there is so much better out there......

I finally added the date to my iPhone so that I move it a month before it's due this time. What is worse is that I have sufficient hosting elsewhere that I could completely drop this and put it all together.

:) Well, hopefully this will be the last time you get stuck with unnecessary debits. If you have domains you want to keep, put them on auto renew. If you want them dropped, make a point now to switch them to manual renew. The same with hosting - stuff falls through the cracks when you get busy, then WHAM, you get that notice TOO late.

Ask the host nicely for a prorated, or even partial refund? Some may agree, others may not, but I don't think it can really hurt to ask.

I would chose a host that accepts paypal. It is far easier to cancel a paypal subscription than it is to cancel a card subscription. I agree, if you don't need this host, get rid of them as soon as possible.

Its good to use PayPal, They charge a low amount for sending money or reciving money I think but you do it all your self. Also its simple just connect a Credit Card or Bank and all your money that you got in the Bank or Credit Card will be Displayed onto paypal but you still could spend that money where ever I think it works out that way.

I've had this happen to myself as well. Like Dan said, I would hope that the host would give you a refund. Especially if you requested it right after it debited.

Check with your new host :) Many hosts will offer a prorated signup, or will credit you "X" months that you had paid somewhere else if you switch to them. It's an easy way for hosts to gather new clients using this method. We still do it here from time to time too.

Perhaps my reading of the original post is wrong, but it seems to me she is paying for hosting that she is using.

AbbieRose freely states she lost track of her billing cycle.

The host here is not at fault as I'm sure she knows but it would not hurt to inquire if they would offer a pro-rated refund.

Oh I see, I was like why would you pay for a host you are not using.

These type of thing you have to not forget.

I write down my server cost and such per month and add it in with my other bills. I cant go wrong there.

Hi!
Virpus earned a cancel notice today for pulling something like that with me. Sending an invoice 7 days before a due date is one thing. Attempting to debit a CC# a full 7 days before it is due is unacceptable.

I guess it pays to be poor..the only thing they got was a cancellation notice.

I'd personally rather get charged unnecessarily than have any of my services get disconnected if I happen to "forget".

I agree that it is better to not be accidentally disconnected, but. Why can't they send the notice out before they debit? Its pretty much relying on the fact that so many people will forget about it coming up, so they take the money and a couple of hours later they send you the notice.

Yes, its totally my own fault and I will finally hopefully get this sorted. Also, I can see the value to the host of automatic billing, ensuring that you get as many renewals as possible through people forgetting. I'm sure it happens a lot.

Not all hosts auto bill in the hopes that people will forget.
Automatic billing is a convenience for both the host and the client and it can keep operating costs down.

We don't send out notices on auto billing simply because of the number of people who change their primary email address in the run of a year. It would be impossible to keep track without people updating their information.

Hi!
The simple fact of the matter is: many hosts do autobill in hopes you forgot. In my case with Virpus..it was totally unreasonable. I signed up for that vps on 10/05/2009.

Sure..I got a notice on 10/28..but then the early autodebitathon ensued. Every day...I mean...come on.

I'll not consider them again..that's clear. Worse still..not a word for them. At least the autodebitathon stopped..still...they could have said *something*.

While I wouldn't put it past some, I seriously doubt that "many" are hoping you forget behind the scenes. Businesses auto bill to better project future revenue & make things easier for their customers. If you don't want payments to come out automatically then don't set it up that way. If your host doesn't accept anything but autopay/subscriptions change hosts.

Don't take this the wrong way because I do understand how you feel(been there), but the blame is yours and there's really no reason to even question provider's methods, intentions, etc.

The purpose of automated billing is to charge you after the said end contract. If your not updated past due of one month go check it out for you not to be debited that much.
