Ok, I love Macs, don't get me wrong. They are great, I have an iPod, it's wonderful - splendiferious one might even say. BUT - I don't go around, spamming my contact list talking about how awesome my PC is and how it can play all the latest games and still have an extra processor and RAM to encode a DVD.
So one of my old high school friends hits me up on AIM tonight right? "HEY! Did you hear Microsoft just released 10 patches?! Hahaha, it's awfully nice having the only OS that is 100% virus free!"
Alright, so I've got no problem with this statement in general. Great, OSX is virus free, that's awesome. Microsoft released 10 patches, that's great too, guess it's time to run Windows Update
So anyways, I proceed to go to Symantec's website and search for "osx virus". First result has something about Trojan pretending to be an install for Microsoft Word 2004 or whatever - awesome, I link him. "What's this about virus free? Explain to me" I tell him.
He gets all defensive and says, "PROOF OF CONCEPT!" Ok, so it's the possibility that it could happen, don't get me wrong, but aren't most patches, upgrades, and fixes based upon someone's original "proof of concept"?
Wikipedia defins Proof of Concept as:
So my questions to this crowd: Do you fret over "Proof of concept" or do you ignore it? What does "Proof of concept" mean to you? And finally - do you have any annoying Mac friends?

So I quote him on that. He gets all defensive and starts talking how he'll send me a PC virus and I can send him a Mac virus and we'll go from there. Awesome - I tell him my E-mail filtering will more than likely catch it, and if it doesn't my antivirus program can catch it, and if it doesn't well then ok he's got me and I'll just have to make do...whatever. At this point I'm not so much concerned as I am just pissed off that he's drained half an hour of my time rambling on about "Proof of concept".The proof of concept is usually considered a milestone on the way of a fully functioning prototype.
