Anyone tried importing mail to Gmail?

I decided that after years of searching for a web-based application I can use for all my email accounts (to break my dependency to Outlook), I will be making a permanent switch to Gmail. At least to a year or two to see how it goes.

Gmail spam filtering and threaded discussion feature simplify my life so drastically that no other application could match. On top of that, the offline access pretty much equals it to any desktop app as well. (The only downside are the ads, but you can't get everything in life for free).

Have you ever tried importing outside email archives into Gmail?

I never used IMAP before, so I hope I don't break anything in the process with my monkey skills. :)

Never tried that, but imapsync works fine. We uses that when migrating accounts and servers involving two control panel and customers insist on migrating the emails as well.
 
IMAP is pretty easy to setup. Your a computer dude so I imagine you will do just fine. Its goes to be time consuming I tell you that with all your emails. Best of luck and if you need help me and webfreak can help you.

Seriously. My monkey skills don't take me too far in the PC world. :D

But damn right it took long! It didn't work completely. I was supposed to be able to move "Folders" just by dragging and dropping them, but that didn't work. So I had to go around it by creating a folder under Google IMAP account and then move the actual emails. :)

It took a few hours, and that's considering some older archives weren't yet touched. :)
