Anyone stockpiling domains?

By stockpiling, I mean purchasing domains for future development. I have more ideas for sites and businesses than I have time to develop at once so whenever I think of one I want to try, I register a name. I'm up to about 20 or so but only developing 3 at the moment.

At one time I thought about doing that...then I realized I had too many ideas, that I'd never follow through on all of them, and that I didn't want to spend the money for the domains only to "discard" them after a year. I figured out which ideas I honestly thought I would follow through on, and went with those.

When I've wanted a business website and haven't already owned the domain, I make up several alternatives. Then I check to see which ones are actually available. I found one where my first choice was being held by a speculator. I filled out their offer form with a fifty-dollar offer, and was given the automated message that my offer was too low. Their script "suggested" a minimum offer of around $1,500. I checked in the Wayback machine, and the domain had been sitting in this semi-fallow state for four years.

I just went with one of my alternatives...and haven't lost a night of sleep. (Part of me fully expects that domain to come available in a few years. I'll debate snapping it up at that point.)

I could never stockpile domains although I can see the temptation once you've bought one. Domains seem to be like Pringles chips. One isn't enough.

But as I've yet to buy my first I can't say I'm worried. I'm too worrisome to buy them without a plan in place and half started.

I'm just the opposite! I've bought domains just because a neat idea popped into my head... but then I usually never use them and I let them expire the next year. A waste of money I know... but I used to be worried the domains would be snatched up and then I'd be out of luck :)

I think I've kicked that habit though.

But then.... another good idea hits!!

.....

DARN! Did it again :smash:

I meant to use

Although I've had a few that I ended up not using in the past, I have used most. I just tend to be thinking several projects ahead and want to be prepared. I currently am developing three at a time and as one is making a bit of money, I'll move on the next one. At times I have sold domains, both developed and not, when I want to do something else. I don't register very esoteric names but specific keyword combinations so they usually sell well when pointed out to the right person.

You have to think of SEO optimization as well.

Exactly, Rider

SEO optimization is why I only use very specific keyword combinations when registering a new domain. When I come up with a new idea, the first thing I do is some keyword research to find keywords that are being searched for but don't have a huge amount of competition.

I have 15 domain names registered and am in the development stages for four of them, 5 of them are already established and the reset aren't even touched yet. I guess I'm guilty of stockpiling lol

I don't stockpile and haven't had the urge. I don't like to spend money before I have pretty clear idea where I'm going with it. I'm not worried about missing a good name because my fertile mind will usually come up with something else.

I too have a stock pile of around 10 extra domains. and unfortunately, i'm too not having enough time to develop them. God knows when i'll be able to start developing them.

ewh

I've thought of doing it myself but not necessarily for my ideas as much but as a possible way to make money by selling them to someone who wants it more than I do. I'm not sure if that is possible but I've heard that you can sell a domain name to someone who wants it badly. Is this a common practice?
