ok, a buddy of mine opened a hosting company. hes new at it, and hes kinda finding it hard to get customers. anyone got ne tips on how to improve on that.

also, this is my question. what is a good way to find good free hosting directories on google. bc i find a few, but there all kinda crappy.

Tell your buddy that webhosting like any business takes time and effort to be successfull. If it were easy, everyone would own their own company.

As far as directories, search some forums, focus your search, there are a few large ones out there: HostingCatalog.com, hostdepartment.com, hostdepartment.com just to name a few.

Good luck!

There are alot of good free directories out there. The way that I found them was to do a search in the way that I thought one of my potential customers would. For instance do a search for reliable web hosting. Take a look at the paid listings at the top and you will find some directories. Some are free to list in and some are not. Also go down the list and look for directories, there are some in there too. Do this for several "hosting" type searches and you will find several good directories. (Don't forget to do all the major search engines/directories as not everyone is listed on each).

Hope this helps some,
Mark

That's an interesting approach Mark, and it seems quite sensible. I still think it's good (in the sense that it can't hurt) to list your company in all hosting directories where it is possible, and where the link can make an SEO impact (the link is not a redirect). Most directories will be useless traffic wise, it's their SEO influence that really matters.

Listing the site in free hosting directories may not help much. Actively partcipating in forums will be a better idea. Finding new customers for hosting is probably the hardest thing to do, with so much competition and cheap prices. As a small company, you need to create an affiliate network and take a personal approach to new customers.

start by offering service to local people/group.
they are much more easier to deal with, and easier to keep in contact. conventional approach is good at here.

First of all this business needs a lot of patience, determination and long hours on the net where you can get your first bunch of customers. Let them be your customers who are asking for free service but atleast get started in some way or the other. Advertise and market it locally first and later your buddy can see for the wider prospects.

Promoting your cmpany is not enough to be happy. If you want your business to be successful you should provide realy good service.

As with any business, patience is the virtue. Before you start a business, you must do a proper research into the business, its prospects, its potential and demand in the market.

Web hosting is not an easy nut to crack. Eversince great buble, net business has boomranged and so has the number of users. If you go by market analysis, nearly 10% web hosting companies die every month. let that not push your friend off because there is influx of greater number of web hosting companies every month. Reseller hosting has in a way been a major factor responsible. Now people need not spend humdreds of dollars or have that huge investments to start a company, but then web hosting business is all about investment and public relations.

Competition is tough and you need to be ready for a bumpy ride. Your friend needs customers but then why should people become his client? Your friends needs to introspect and find answer to this question. Take it like i am a customer, so obvius question is when there are so many web hosts today, what makes your friend's hosting company special? What makes his company stand out from the rest? What does he provide that is not available from competition? Its all about value added services besides a stable network. Few companies throw in offers of free templates or scripts or similar. Still others would tempt with domain names. But then as a customer, i would always want to go with some one who has been there for significant amount of time, has reputation in market, is easy to approach, reliable and has economical hosting packages where i can derive more than i would otherwise if i were with some other equally capable company. So, you got the answer? Your friend needs to project his business on these lines and promote it as much as he can. Do press releases, hire an agency, advertise in local newspapers, do whatever you can, may be roll in radio boradcasters. Project features where customers feel they are getting more for their spending and i am sure he will start having customers sooner or later. Once custoemrs start flowing in, thats the time to impress the clientage. Have meaningful, courteous and quick support. believe me, word of mouth sells and if your current clientage is happy, they will bring more customers for you.

In nutshell, there is no short cut to success. You need to understand what is that others would be interested in and accordingly project those assets or features.

Bandboy has mentioned a very important thing, it;'s about finding your niche and branding youir hosting business as unique.

The hosting market is very and very specific. Your buddy should understand that this business is not very ease to manege.

Starting a web hosting company is very complex, you are going to find customers among so many giants and well established companies.

By offering quality and very inexpensive packages, your friend can have a faster approach to finding new customers.

2 good starter options

(1) Definitely geo-targeting - do a PPC campaign with MSN, Yahoo and/or Adwords (they all have free marketing money if you're just signing up for the first time) and use highly specific (and cheaper) keywords to target people by niche and location

(2) Find independent hosting listers (not ones tied to banner affiliate ads that make them lots of money). Convince them that your service is worth having them review and add to their list.

This is good advice. I haven't actually done the math, but I would wager than better than 80% of our customers so far have come from the forums that I/we participate in.

The problem with hosting directories or Google AdWords (or anything non-local and non-personal) is that they put you on a global playing field.

Very few of us can stand out when we're lumped in with the entire world of web hosts and wannabe web hosts. The most effective way (IMHO) to get customers is by relationships built through forums, real life contacts, and other 'smaller' venues.

The alternatives are just too massive to be useful.

I've considered this, but I'm not sure how to geo target myself. My corporation is located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, but virtually all of my hardware is located in the US.

So who do I geo-target? I can see people getting annoyed if they'ce chosen to go with me because I'm local and then find out that all my costs are funnelled down to the US. And vice-versa with US customers...?
