Any thoughts about Google buying Twitter?

I heard that too. Doesn't really effect me, but the way I see it: Google has done a very good job opening things up to "the people". It's a huge company, yet whenever I've needed to contact someone there they have a small business "personal touch". I wish more were like them, so in a way I'm glad they are acquiring more and more essentially accomplishing that.

I have come to know that twitter is the same company from where Google purchased blogger 5 yrs back. Is that true????

Google may know more about the Internet than I do, but if I were buying a business, I'd at least want it to show profitability first.
Good point, but is there the POTENTIAL for huge profit?

In June of 2008 "The goal of Google is not to monetise everything, our goal is to change the world – monetisation is a technology to pay for it," he said. It "seemed obvious" there should be "significant amounts of money" to be made from YouTube, he added, but the company has not yet come up with the formula.

While YouTube dominates web video, it has had a hard time monetizing, largely because marketers are reluctant to advertise alongside user-generated videos. That's all going to change next year, according to YouTube's director of content, Jordan Hoffner.

YouTube has recently rolled out lower-third ads, ads beside videos and search ads, and will focus on click-to-buy and co-branded entertainment deals in the new year (2009) . In addition, YouTube plans to make more deals for premium content in the hope of shaking the stigma that it is only a place to watch videos of skateboarding cats.

Time will tell .............

I am sure shareholders will be happy about it. They keep loading themselves with companies that don't make money - the stock will sooner or later give in and I want to see them deal with the short-selling.

I read about this as well this morning, from my understanding they are in the talking stage. Anything can happen or not.

I believe Google was interested in Digg last year but they ended walking away.

Kevin Rose is the man! I started watching "the broken" years ago, since have followed Diggnation, and a few others on Revision3. How would it be to get paid, fee gear, and get drunk all while bs'ing to your buddy about stuff you hear online? Dream job. :D

It can be more than just 'direct profit'.

As from what I see, Twitter can be useful for Google to sort out the popularity of certain topics/news easily, which in turn helps Google fine-tuning their SERP in Google Search and Google News.

We are already seeing Google including universe search into their search result pages (means mixing video, news, and product results into SERP) and introducing a digg-alike voting system for its members. I'm not surprise if Google will use such data along with the new info from Twitter to judge what's in and what's out for their SERP.

With a better search result, Google gets more users; with more users, the company makes more money.

I think by acquiring Twitter, Google will further stretch itself across popular social domains and thus control even more of the advertising market with their adsense. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to buy out Facebook sometime in the future either.
