Airline Turbulence

I was intrigued by all the passengers that got hurt recently when their airliner hit severe turbulence. None of the injured were wearing their seat belts. Hard to imagine getting thrown out of your seat and bounced off the ceiling.

I've flown through some fairly severe turbulence between Lanai and Maui where the yoke was nearly ripped from my hand. But that doesn't compare to what these folks experienced.

I think people expect the smoothest experience, given the ultimate level of ignorance of being/feeling above nature and its common cycles/processes.

I NEVER take my seat off when flying and always ask everyone who flies with me to stay buckled up exactly for this reason - unexpected turbulence.

Having said that, its too bad what these people had to go through (I am sure some of them thought this was the end of them), and I can't blame them. Being from a family of pilots (mom's side), I am used to flying, but I still get nervous when we get into turbulence.

I stay buckled up too, and I don't find it uncomfortable. You bring up a really good point though, that your neighbors should do the same. I saw a show on Discovery Channel, where a lady had suffered a spinal compression and was left with continuous pain as a result of her seat neighbor flying off his seat and landing on her.

I haven't been in a airplane in a long time but I hate having my life in the hands of someone else. I always had a hard just driving around with people. I always watch my surroundings but I been like since I dad always told to watch your surroundings at all times.

I remember flying from Honolulu to Hilo during flight training with my instructor (under the hood) - running into turbulence the entire trip. I was a mess. The trip back was fine. Thinking back, I never wear my seat belt on the airlines - that needs to change. :)
