"LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- A California man who collected 1 million pennies for a bet is having a hard time cashing in on his $10,000 fortune."

"Ron England has amassed 3.6 tons of copper in his garage in the Los Angeles suburb of Granada Hills after making a bet with his brother 30 years ago that he could collect 1 million pennies."

[...]

""I've been working seriously for the past two weeks to get rid of these pennies," England, 60, told the Los Angeles Daily News. "It's kind of frustrating. Nobody will take them without charging me.""

Haha...
He could go to local shops and banks (In a 60 mile radius ;) ) and give them a few of the bank coin bags in exchange for dollars.
Might take him a while to do that though ;)

It's a bit mad though to go so far about a bet with your brother, made 30 years ago..

Wow that is a lot of weight. I can see the image now, dump truck pulls up to house and loads pennies, convoy ensues as truck arrives at local bank and unloads cargo on front lawn. Bystanders arrested trying to rush the gates....

heh. I remember back when I was living in the U.K. - I decided to catch the bus to town instead of walking because it was raining, and I paid for the ticket all in 1 and 2 penny pieces. Boy was the bus driver mad - The ticket was about £1, so it was well over fifty coins.

Boy was he mad... pretty funny really. :P
He said next time I'd need to pay with a £1 coin, otherwise I wouldn't be allowed onto the bus. :o

I would pay my taxes with it! Give the taxman a hernia, couldn't happen to a better person!

John (Probably on an FBI watchlist now for that post)
