Apparently, a big story here in Canada - 17 terrorists with plans to bomd a few locations in the province of Ontario were arrested. Weapons and tons of ammonium nitrate were confiscated during the raids.

While more arrests are coming, I have two things to say:

First, I am very impressed with Canadian Security Intelligence Service who catch any high on hormone retards before they can do harm to this land and its people. (Actually, sort of triggers that it is also possible that is could have been a political-triggered campaign).
Second, I cannot believe that they would even think of acting against Canada - after everything that Canada did for them and their families. Its a pretty known fact that there are a number of terrorist cells operating in Canada. But to think that they would act against the country that harbors them so well... That's like someone coming to your rescue when you are drowning, and then you stepping on their head in the attempt to save yourself.

Best,

What can I say... It's good when they catch them and it's way better when they do it while the terrorists are still just preparing. :agree:

Well, we have known for a long time that our border crossings are lax, thus allowing certain undesirables and their comodeties into the country. But hopefully this puts a lid on it and sends a clear message to those with unpatriotic ideas.

Canadian Security Intelligence....or... CSI! WOOOH!

Sorry :)

Art do you live near Ontario?

What pisses me off is that at the same time Steven Harper is gushing over Bush about how helpful he was American politicians are playing the fear card with their citizens call Canada a terrorist safehaven. I dare say we have a somewhat better security record than the US.

I defy anyone to show me a single terrorist incident in the United States that was perpetrated by someone who entered via Canada.

Blue,

Its not about being north of the border its about being South, East, or West of the border in the U.S. Plus, you have to agree that there shouldn't be a wall between the U.S. and Canada to help Canadians running to the U.S. Oh wait, people from Mexico wants to come to the U.S. people from the U.S. want to be in Cananda. Damn, we got beat again. We cannot even play fair.

Well I guess we can atleast say one thing the population of the U.S. is still growing faster then we are losing people. Lot more come from the south then leave to the North.

Have a good day.

I don't think there should be a wall on any border.
Even the suggestion of a wall on a border is empty political rhetoric that politicians use to make people they are doing something to solve a problem they don't want solved.

If the US was serious about immigration control they would fix it.
Mexicans cannot be blamed for crossing the border. They are no different than anyone else in the sense that they want to live a better life and they want to provide for their families.
Therein lies the problem. Mexicans cross the border because they have incentive to cross the border. If the US would make companies who employ illegal aliens accountable for their actions then they wouldn't employ illegal aliens.
If there is no employment, there is no incentive. Problem solved.

Of course the politicians will never hold big business accountable for anything as long as they are in bed with them.

In reference to the OP, interesting (and predictable and not surprising) that the Toronto Stock Exchange was reportedly one of the main targets for attack. I guess it's no surprise they would go for the financial heart of the country.

Sadly this is true Vito.
If you look at the history of recent terrorism it is obvious they are not an unorganized or unintelligent bunch.

1. They work in independent groups
2. The attacks in Indonesia. All against tourist targets designed to effect the economy.
3. The attacks last year and this year in Egypt. Both during tourist season in tourist destinations. Both designed to disrupt tourism and hurt the economy.
4. Attacks against Iraqi civilians while dressed in security or police uniforms. Designed to destroy confidence in the "official" security forces of the country.
5. The 911 attacks against established land marks. Designed to send the message that no place is immune.
6. The constant movement of the "insurgents" in Iraq. The Bin Laden "whack a mole" philosophy that a few attacks in one place will attract all of the attention while they set up attacks in a different location. Ultimately costing billions of dollars in resources.
7. The Madrid and London train attacks. Designed to decrease confidence in public transportation.

The list goes on and on.
It is a frightening fact that the terrorists are well organized and well financed and well educated. The problem is, our politicians seem to think that the "eye for an eye" and "fight terror with terror" solution is the best one.

If the situation with the IRA in Briton has taught us anything, it has taught us that intelligent negotiation is the only way to resolve these issues.

Interesting experiment by one of our local TV news stations Global TV.

Mirroring Timothy McVeigh's actions 11 years ago in Oklahoma, the news crew rented a cube van. They proceeded to park it (for 30 minutes) in front of 3 prominent Toronto locations - CN Tower, MTCC (Metro Toronto Convention Centre) and the Toronto Stock Exchange. In all 3 cases, they were never approached or questioned by any security staff. Frankly, this surprises me, given the recent arrests related to planned terrorist attacks in our fair city.

I would have to see the report Vito, but there are so many cars, trucks, vans, busses etc. that park in front of these landmarks every hour of every day, I can't imagine you would be able to monitor them all.

We pretty much have to resign ourselves to the fact that there are bad people out there who will do bad things. We do a pretty good job of minimizing them but sooner or later one is going to fit through the cracks, even if the city was under marshal law.

Yup. Sad, but real. Security is an illusion.

Well and who's to say it'd be a "cube van". They could do comparable damage with any number of vehicles. Hell, they wouldn't even have to necessarily park it very long, a lot of these people wouldn't give too much hesitation to just driving straight into the building and detonating on impact.

Whether people like to hear it or not, there is a price to be paid for living in a free society. There is no way "the government" can protect us from all harm yet allow us to be free.
